Dear Parents
On Wednesday we celebrated World Children's Day and Vietnam Teacher's Day. It was a wonderful day of celebration and on behalf of the school, I would like to thank all students and families for their contributions and gifts to the staff on this day. Thank you.
And on World Children's Day some primary students visited my office as they took over the running of the school for the day! Good job!
On Monday you will have received an email about our annual parent satisfaction survey. We would be grateful if you could take the time to complete the survey. If you screen shot the completion page and send into the teacher, your child will receive a gift. There are other incentives that were outlined by the two Heads of Section.
We are really looking forward to our first Christmas event and I hope many of you including family and friends can join us for the fun morning. Please kindly register for your tickets HERE.
On Thursday Secondary hosted their Live Lunch performance. This was a great event and showcased some of the many musical talents we have in our school.
This weekend some of our students will be heading out for their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award practice event. Good luck to all the students and staff involved
I wish you all a very relaxing weekend ahead.
Vietnamese Teachers’ Day
It's been a wonderful week made all the better by World Children's Day and by the touching expressions of appreciation from so many parents towards our educators on Teachers' Day.
On behalf of the teachers, I'd like to thank you for working with us supportively, for the good of the children.
World Children's Day
On Wednesday 20th November it was World Children’s Day. At BVIS Primary, one of the things that this meant was that the Primary Leadership Team was replaced by a capable team of Year 6 students. Head of Primary for the day was Tan Phat. Deputy Head of Primary was Minh Phuc. Assistant Head of Primary was Bao Chau.
During the day they took over various duties, including overseeing the running of the school and attending meetings with various senior members of the school administration. We are very proud of how maturely they took on this leadership role and they seemed to enjoy it greatly.
Be Kind, be Helpful and be Clever
This week was a special week for appreciating each other and saying, “thank you”. A school is not a school without your wonderful children and so International Children’s Day was the perfect opportunity for the Early Years to talk about their friends, their interests and what makes them unique. The children even explored what they want to be when they grow up. An important discussion about celebrating both personality qualities and remarkable capabilities. Be kind, be helpful and be clever.
Friendship Food
During Friendship Week, Year 1 took part in delightful activities that celebrated themes of friendship, care, and sharing. They listened to various stories, such as "The Rainbow Fish" and "Lucy the Ladybird," which emphasised the importance of kindness and connection. Collaborating with Year 4, they created a special dish called "Friendship Food," representing the ingredients that contribute to a strong friendship. Additionally, the children crafted their own Friendship Jars, filling them with wishes and qualities they hope to find in a friend.
Problem-Solving Skills
In Year 2, students are exploring the topic of money. They practice comparing different amounts, reading values, and engaging in role-play activities where they "buy" items and share their change. Children are beginning to demonstrate their problem-solving skills related to money.
Enthusiasm and Creativity
Year 3 students have been working hard in their English lessons, focusing on developing their oral confidence. They have been performing stories and other pieces of written work to their classmates, using actions to bring their words to life. These activities help the children to speak clearly and confidently, while also deepening their understanding of vocabulary and how to convey meaning. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and creativity they bring to each performance.
Friendship Recipe
During Friendship Week, Year 4 paired up with Year 1 to discuss the "Formula for Friendship" and ways to build meaningful relationships. The activity was filled with excitement, inspired creativity, and strengthened bonds between the classes. Year 4 students worked collaboratively, shared ideas, listened attentively, and produced fantastic projects. So proud of their teamwork and unity!
What Makes a Good Friend?
Last week, Year 5 celebrated Friendship Week. Every day, there was a new activity to do.
On Monday, Year 5 students watched a video about how kindness kind be spread. On Tuesday, the students thought about what sort of behaviour is rude, mean and bullying. On Wednesday, they gave each other compliments. On Thursday, we learned about different kinds of bullying and on Friday, the students made some collaborative art.
Year 5 students also spent time with Year 2 and F2. Together, they thought about what makes a good friend, and then they read stories to each other.
TV News Reports
Year 6 students focused on enhancing their presentation skills while they showcased the news company brands they had developed. Next, they’ll be preparing TV news reports based on those brands.
Secondary Weekly Update 22/11/2024
An update from Ms Claire
It has been an extremely busy week in BVIS Secondary. It was lovely to see so many parents at the Year 10 Parent Teacher Conference (PTC) on Tuesday and we are really looking forward to welcoming Year 11 parents next week.
On Wednesday I had the privilege of experiencing my first ever Vietnamese Teacher’s Day. I was completely amazed by the generosity of our families. The school was full of cakes, fruit and flowers. However, the most significant part of the experience for me was the deep appreciation shown by students and families for teachers and education. It was a wonderful and rather humbling experience. Thank you so much to our students and parents, the staff at BVIS really appreciate all you did for us this week.
Wednesday also marked World Children’s Day. We celebrated by wearing blue. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 attended a special assembly led by our Year 12 UNICEF ambassadors Huu Quang (Sandy) Ta, Huu Sang Vu, Linh Chi Le. They spent time thinking about Children’s rights and the inequities faced by young people around the world. It was also lovely to be able to welcome so many parents along to this assembly and into classes afterwards.
On Thursday, we held the first ever Hanoi Schools Coding Competition. It was a fantastic event, and we will be sharing more information about this next week
This week’s newsletter has a strong focus on service learning. This is central to our values and work as a school community and in the last week, we have had 2-year groups involved in incredible projects.
Finally, I also plan to introduce ‘student spotlight’ section in the newsletter to celebrate student achievements. If your child has been involved in any events, competitions or charity work outside school, please do contact me at claire.slowther@bvishanoi.com to let me know about it.
Elderly Club
Last week, our Year 8 students visited the Elderly Club of Thanh Xuan District. Students were treated to some wonderful musical and dance performances from club members and then were invited to participate too. The students had the opportunity to chat with their older friends over food and learn about their lives. The students had a fantastic time and some reflections their reflections are below;
To make your elders happy you should understand them and actually look in on how they raised you and you should pay them back by listening to them and what's best for you because they have a deeper understanding and because of that you should listen to them. Peter (8I)
A lady helped me to play drums and dance! – Gia Khanh (8I)
"If you want to be happy in your life don't compare what you have to others but appreciate what you already have" is a quote from a lady I sat with. – Quang Huy (8I)
Advice that one of the elderly told me is that when you’re young you should appreciate that your parents for taking care of you and when you grow up you realize that it’s too late to say thank you to your parents. – Raven (8I)
The visit to the elderly club was very unique and exquisite because we can learn new things, like what they did during their time when they were young. We can learn about the history of human society, how they had fun, learn to appreciate our elders while they are still here, and to take advice from the old and wise. – Jayden (8I)
I enjoyed and got to know a lot about the elderly peoples life and also got to play a few of drums and other instruments. Everyone there was really friendly and energetic. I had a lot of fun. – Lean Tony (8V)
Year 11 Service Learning
On Saturday 16th November, 56 Year 11students travelled to Phuc Xa, An Xa, Ba Dinh. They collected plastic waste in Phuc Xa area which has been heavily affected by typhoon Yagi. Post storm, there are several collaborations between local authority, local communities and embassies, NGOs, other schools in Hanoi to help clean the area. Still, the work requires more support from everyone in the community. Our students and staff did an incredible job at clearing up the area. They worked extremely hard and made a big difference.
The students were joined by other groups including: the local authority, Youht Committee, Women Committee, the Red Cross, Love Hanoi, some volunteers from bank and international group.
Student Spotlight
Good luck to Ha Phuong Nguyen (9I) who is performing in The Nutcracker at the Opera House. This performance is part of Vietnam’s National Opera and Ballet programme and this is an extremely impressive achievement. Her little sister Ha Chi Nguyen (7V) is helping out backstage.
What’s been happening in Computer Science?
Year 11 have been working hard on database concepts and Year 10 are feeling really proud of their iteration code.
