Dear Parents
This week we had a team of evaluators on school from CIS/WASC. We have applied to be re-accredited to give you all confidence that what we offer here is of a high international standard.
Early feedback has been very positive, and they have had a great week in the school talking to students, staff and parents. We are looking forward to the final report in due course and I have every confidence that the school will have met the very high standards set by CIS and WASC.
This week we also welcomed Erin Wight from the Juilliard School to BVIS Hanoi. She worked with our music teachers and students for two days on the Juilliard curriculum that is unique to NAE and our schools.
Thank you to all those parents who have responded to our re-enrolment survey. I am delighted to say that we are on track to have the best ever family retention rate here at BVIS for the next academic year. That alongside one of the best ever staff retention rates for the school means we are looking in really great shape for the next academic year. Thank you.
Just a reminder that we will be running the summer school program again this year. If you haven’t done so already, please sign up before 30 April to get 10% discount of the Summer School program tuition fee. For further information, you can check at this link.
I wish you all a very relaxing weekend ahead.

School Value – Reflection
The teaching and learning at BVIS is intrinsically linked to core values. In the Early Years Centre, teachers use the Class Dojo Monsters to make the values relatable to our youngest of learners. This week, Reflection Ray has played a huge part in our learning and play across the classes. Reflection is a key part of the day for both the teacher and the child. The teacher makes changes to the provision and teaching strategies based on the children’s needs and the child is encouraged to observe and learn from their peers.
Developing the whole child
In Year 1, in addition to academic activities, children also take part in physical and mental development activities. At the start of the morning, they participate in well-being activities, such as sharing about their weekends, engaging in workouts, taking part in activities that enhance their senses, demonstrating empathy and gratitude, and more. In the outdoor playground area, the teachers design a variety of activities, including building, role-playing, creative areas, cycling, badminton, and others, to help the children relax after learning and create an environment where they can collaborate, communicate, and share with their friends while playing.
Global Citizens – Learning about Natural Habitats
This term the year 2 students have been learning about different habitats. This week they began planning their ocean, rainforest or savannah diorama. The students will include animals and plants in their diorama.
Persuasive Advertising of Chocolate
Year 3 have been learning about persuasive adverts. They created their own brand of chocolate bar. They were very excited as they had the chance to make the chocolate bar themselves and choose the ingredients that they would like inside it. They then created a chocolate bar wrapper with their own title, slogan and description of the ingredients.
Global Citizens – Land, Sea and Sky
As part of our topic “Land, Sea, and Sky”, Year 4 students collaborated with the Wild Rhino Organisation. As well as producing the 3D Rhino Posters to spread awareness within the local community, Year 4 students also participated in an art competition, creating their own visual art at home to further contribute to the national effort to combat the rhino horn trade in Vietnam. The final work will be uploaded to the Wild Rhino social media and we look forward to the winners being announced in the ‘Exit Point’ assembly. Enjoy our art by checking this site: Year 4 Wild Rhino Drawing Competition (padlet.com)
Global Citizens – The Olympics
This week, during IPC, Year 5 learnt about the Olympics. They watched videos of different events, learned about the differences between the ancient Olympics and the modern Olympics and then designed posters to advertise the Olympics.
Later this week, they will have a go at some of the Olympic events, which they will compete in during the Exit Point.
School Values - Caring and Reflection: Y6’s Service Learning Trip Year with Y7
This past week, Year 6 students went to visit The Forest Park, in Hanoi. This used to be Hanoi’s biggest illegal landfill and with the help from the Y6 students at BVIS, it has been transformed into a beautiful park where children and families from the local community can go and enjoy playing on the jungle gym, relaxing on the benches in the gardens, and even getting nourishing vegetables from the veggie garden. During the Year 6 trip last week, the students created protection from the elements by placing woodchips around the vegetable plants and watering them. They produced a very effective compost using old banana trees and other natural ingredients which they had to mix. They painted a ‘bug hotel’ which is used as a creative way to encourage biodiversity. Bug hotels provide shelter and nesting sites to native and migratory solitary insects. Students also had to put on their gloves and clear up the trash which continues to be thrown onto the floors of the park.
School value CARING and GLOBAL CITIZEN
As part of our ongoing commitment to our students continuing their educational journey to the top universities in the world, we continue to have many universities visiting the school to give the students all the information they need to make informed choices for their career path.
We were joined by Universities from UK and USA, in the CIALFO FAIR. These included notable schools from the Russell Group UK (Newcastle and Durham). Our students enjoyed one to one interactions with the representatives of the schools asking insightful questions and receiving some great feedback. Being able to have this direct contact is invaluable to understanding the institutions and what they offer. Well done KS 4 & 5 for purposely representing us here at BVIS Hanoi.
School value CARING, RESPECT and INTEGRITY
Last week year 7 and year 9 parents were invited into school to have a two-way conference with their child(ren). The aim is for children to lead an academic conversation about their learning and progress throughout the year. Parents and students had a fantastic time catching up on all the interesting work they have been doing!
School value ENQUIRY
As you are all aware, Nord Anglia has a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As part of the partnership we are provided with world-class resources for STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths). So throughout the year our students are given the opportunity to participate in these challenges which serve to provide them with the tools for success in the future world.
To promote STEAM further, each region hosts an annual STEAM Festival and we had the privilege of attending this with some of our Year 6, 7 and 8 students.
During the festival, they were tasked to create their own new planet and had to consider their planets structure, how they would transport themselves around the planet and food sources. So throughout the weekend they engaged in a range of designing, building, robotics and biological growing tasks. The students enjoyed themselves thoroughly and will now share everything they learned with the rest of our students in their science lessons.
The students that took part were:
“We did lots of things like building accommodation using wool and pipes and had to design our own exo-planet using digital tools” - Phan Dang Quan (Milo) - 7V
“I loved the workshops, as it was very fun and educational. I also loved making the house of poles and fabric. It was really nice and I enjoyed staying in that house” - Hoang Van - 7I
“The teachers were really friendly. I did miss my parents and my sister but it was fun and I got to learn more stuff about STEAM” – Rowa - 6I
“Through this trip, I knew steam is more fun then I thought!” - Jaehee – 6B
School values ENQUIRY, CARING and GLOBAL CITIZENS
We held a Year 9 climate activism conference in their Geography lesson. Students could work in groups of up to 4 to produce a form of activism aimed at creating change around renewable energy. Half the groups decided on a presentation, whilst the other half chose to write a letter to the school/Hanoi community. The activism on show was excellent – students were able to accurately describe renewable energy, explain advantages of it, and were able to provide solutions to the disadvantages.
