Primary School February and March Highlights from Ms Lebihan

Ms Lebihan looks back over a busy, exciting and fun half term.

Dear Parents,

We have had a great half term in the Primary School and as ever it has been a hive of learning, activity and fun. There have been some fantastic events and trips, including the EYFS visit to Snow City, the Year 2 visit to the Insect and Butterfly Park on Sentosa and of course the Year 6 residential to Udon Thani in Thailand. I know each trip was well-enjoyed by the children and we thank the staff for their meticulous planning of these activities. Thailand was, of course, a particularly big one; and although staff and students returned home exhausted, they were also full of stories and great memories which I know have been shared with you. 

Our big event this term was Book Week with English classwork linked to books and authors. Thanks to the English team for their work on making this a fantastic week. As always, it ended with a dress-up day that saw the school overrun with Where’s Wally characters, as well as many other well-known book favourites. Thanks to the parents and children for their great efforts in the dress-up and for bringing the school alive. The Extreme Reading competition was great fun with books being read in some very daring locations.  Well done to our runners up and also to the winners, as listed below, for entertaining us so well: 

The Swimming Galas created a big splash and an atmosphere of great excitement in the pool areas. Thanks to the parents for coming along to cheer the children on and to the PE team for their careful organisation. The galas ran like clockwork and our Year 3 and Year 4 children certainly had a great time!

We have been lucky enough to be treated to some fantastic musical events this half term. The Proms was a huge success - the children who performed, despite being a little nervous at the start, grew in confidence and absolutely shone by the end. The range of music and singing was well-enjoyed and made for a truly lovely evening. Following this, the choirs’  Spring Concert was another great hit. The children rehearsed hard and the outcome was a polished performance. Thanks to the staff involved for their dedication and for making the event happen.

The Upper Primary discos brought the sparkles out and we witnessed some great dancing from the students this year! As ever, a big thank you to the DCA for coordinating these much-loved events and to the teachers who liaised closely to ensure everything ran smoothly. We look forward to more of the same next year – particularly the photo booth which was a great hit with the students. 

This term, we have also celebrated World Down Syndrome Day by wearing jazzy (and in some cases wonderfully ill-matched!) socks, and Autism Awareness Day saw us all dressed in a sea of blue. It is great to be a part of these special days which are remembered around the world and are a true celebration of our diverse and inclusive school community at Dover Court. Thanks for joining in so enthusiastically, everyone. 

House Days have continued to add a feeling of friendly competition as well as a sense of community around the school. Thanks to Mr Liperis for arranging a variety of science activities across the school for the Science House Day. We look forward to the upcoming Maths House Day next term. Our children in Primary also participated in the STEAM week with great enthusiasm. I enjoyed seeing all their fantastic innovations, all inspired by animals. 

The final day of Term 2 is always a lovely one as the Lower Primary children arrive wearing their Easter Bonnets. We had some great concoctions this year with everything from rabbits and carrots to chicks and eggs. I often wonder at the creativity of the children and parents as Easter Bonnets was never a great skill of mine when my son was small!  Thank you to the classes who led the Easter assemblies to – it was a lovely way to end the term. 

With such a busy term, I am certain the children are looking forward to a well-deserved break. As ever, we must say a sad but fond farewell to the families who must leave us. Thank you for choosing Dover Court and please do remember us. For those returning in Term 3, we look forward to seeing you after the break - Happy Holidays everyone!
