Last week the children enjoyed participating in their second STEAM Week challenge. This term, our friends at MIT challenged the children to design and create a device which was inspired by the supernatural powers within the animal kingdom.

Last week the children enjoyed participating in their second STEAM Week challenge. This term, our friends at MIT challenged the children to design and create a device which was inspired by the supernatural powers within the animal kingdom.
In Year 6, we took our inspiration from the mantis shrimp. This little sea creature packs the most powerful punch of any animal! The children worked in small groups to create a device that produced the strongest 'punch' they could. 6RC were lucky enough to have guest visitor and industrial designer, Matt Durack, come in to work with them on their designs. He spoke to the children about how his role at work heavily revolves around STEAM and the thought processes he goes through when solving problems. Mr. Durack also modelled the mechanical workings of a frog’s leg and explained how we could apply this to our challenge. He then supported the children in designing their own punching mechanism. After designing and engineering their pieces, the children then went on to test and evaluate their work.
