Through research we know that early transitions in school are hugely important and can have an impact on long-term academic and occupational achievement. At DCIS, we know that as a school, it is vital for us to ensure that these transitions are as smooth as possible to enable the child to achieve their full potential.
We recognise that how children deal with transitions can be hugely varied and is often dependent on their previous experiences of change. Children tend to look at their parents or trusted adults for guidance on how to react to these transitions and therefore it is vital that parents remain positive and consistent about any changes that the children are likely to face. All feelings related to the change or transition should be acknowledged but strategies should be offered to help children cope with these feelings.
The workshop led by Mrs. Gray, featured Year Group Leaders from EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2. Ms Dennis spoke about the practical transitions in EYFS, Mrs. Smith discussed what happens in Year 1 and Mr Castle shared more about what transitions look like in Year 2 as the children prepare for the Upper Primary. As a part of the workshop, parents participated in a practical activity which helped to showcase the necessity of a considered approach to transitions.
