World Children’s Day on 20th November is the day officially recognised by the United Nations as a Global Day of Action for children, by children, and marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
On World Children’s Day, BSB Shunyi students enjoyed a variety of activities to learn about UNICEF and the rights of children, voice out on issues that they care about, work on a project to support a local orphanage and celebrate the joys of being a child!
Please watch the above video and hear what our students and teachers think about 3 articles from the ‘Convention on the Rights of the Child’ and what they would do if they could run the school!
Primary students celebrated World Children's Day (WCD) all week! Every day at lunchtime our Global Campus Leader, Mr Casey, and his team of Student Leaders - the Global Steamers ran fun activities teaching students all about WCD. The activities were connected to UNICEF and mostly the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #4 - Quality Education.
Monday’s activity involved producing a poster of one of the 54 children’s rights articles outlined by the United Nations ‘Convention on the Rights of the Child’. The children chose a card with a specific rights article and created posters.
Tuesday and Wednesday saw our ‘Big Draw’ where a 4m x 4m piece of paper was laid across the piano platform and children created the UNICEF logo in blue. Various logos representing what was important to children were produced which gave the children a feeling of ownership on what was important to them on WCD.
On Thursday the children produced mini posters of SDG #4 - Quality Education. They chose a specific target of SDG #4 to draw which the world is working on to achieve the goal of ‘Quality Education’.
On Friday everyone was invited to come dressed in 'what makes them happy' so we can celebrate the joys of being a child.
Primary assemblies were run by our Student Council, sharing the work that UNICEF does and why the day is so important.
Primary students also spend Friday creating educational resources for children at Dew Drops. Children that are looked after by the Dew Drops charity aren't as fortunate as the children at BSB so we are using our time to teach them and send them lessons and videos, fulfilling the theme of WCD 'Inclusion for everyone'.
Our Secondary Students came together to create the symbol of a heart in celebration of World Children’s Day. They also enjoyed a range of very meaningful activities put together by our teachers for WCD, reminding us that every child is unique and to be valued.
Key Stage 3 students celebrated the character strengths of their classmates and themselves, as well as learning some mindfulness tools that will enable them to self-regulate in times of challenge or difficulty. Students also explored gratitude and the realities of wealth equality in our world today. Students across secondary also developed their leadership skills, as they planned student-led house competitions and helped primary students with their project to support a local orphanage.
Teachers gave examples of student learnings on WCD
“During the Equality Workshop, we explored the way different factors can create inequality in the world and how children around the globe are affected. Students learnt how fortunate they are to have their basic necessities covered since many other people their own age do not. They also discussed how they can help those with less resources and how to be an advocate for those in need, whether that is in their communities or in other parts of the world.” Mr. Mendez, Foreign Languages Teacher
“In the Character Strengths Workshop, students can tell their characters strengths are different from others and each one is quite happy to find out their own strength. By an interesting survey, not only did they learn how to identify themselves but also treat the others. Students shared the final reports with peers and most of them thought the reports were quite accurate. There were a lot of discussions after big, good laugh.” Mr. Zheng, Secondary Chinese Teacher
