The British School of Beijing recently hosted BritMUN 2025, a Model United Nations (MUN) event that highlights the exceptional organisational and leadership skills of our students. This year's conference was a remarkable success, attracting many student delegates from different schools across Beijing, including the British School of Beijing, the International School of Beijing, Dulwich College Beijing, and Beijing World Youth Academy.
"MUN has opened my eyes to the bigger world that I could not have imagined. BRITMUN will be my ‘wish-come true’, to provide delegates the same memorable experience I had". Lily Kim, BSB Shunyi Year 12
The event commenced with an inspiring speech by Mr Benjamin Rae from the United Nations, setting the tone for a weekend of rigorous debate and diplomacy. His presence underscored the significance of the event and the incredible position that BSB holds in the global community, while motivating all the delegates to engage deeply with the fundamental issues at hand. Mr Rae's address emphasised the importance of youth involvement in global governance and the role of MUN in shaping future leaders.
One of the most impressive aspects of BritMUN 2025 was that it was entirely student-led and organised. From the initial planning stages to the execution of the event, students took charge, demonstrating exceptional leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, evening tackling a surprise gale-force storm that shut down Beijing on the original weekend the event was slated to take place! This hands-on approach provided them with invaluable real-world experience and fostered a sense of ownership and pride in their accomplishments.
The creation of BritMUN has been, in every sense of the word, a truly collaborative effort. The MUN executive team, secretariats, and Mr Cusack, alongside primary and secondary school administrative volunteers and staff, worked tirelessly to make this conference a reality. The theme of the conference, "Preventing the Domino Effect," further channels the ethos of the event, prioritising sustainable solutions over short-term and ensuring that our delegates develop a wider perspective on the consequences of their actions.
Participating in BritMUN 2025 empowered students to hone a variety of essential skills. Through rigorous debate and negotiation, delegates developed their public speaking and critical thinking abilities. The event also emphasised the importance of diplomacy, collaboration, and cultural awareness, as students from diverse backgrounds worked together to tackle global issues.
The theme of this year's BritMUN challenged delegates to explore meaningful solutions to prevent the domino effect in our interconnected society. By addressing this theme, delegates gained deeper insights into balancing global development and preventing cascading failures. This process highlighted an important truth: the path forward can only be achieved through cooperation, which is something that students learn from day one at BSB Shunyi.
The event featured a wide range of committees, each focusing on different global challenges. Students engaged in lively discussions on topics such as climate change, international security, and human rights. This diversity of subjects ensured that there was something for everyone, allowing students to explore their interests and passions while gaining a deeper understanding of complex international issues.
One delegate representing the USA remarked, "My main consideration is to extend a helping hand to countries like Angola. These nations, despite their rich potential, face numerous challenges. I am committed to exploring viable strategies to help develop their economies and infrastructure”.
Another delegate, focusing on illicit economic activity, stated, "My chosen topic, the illegal trade of blood diamonds, is a matter of great significance. This illicit activity not only undermines the economic stability of poor countries but also causes untold human suffering. Countless people from these disadvantaged countries have been victims of this heinous trade, and they desperately deserve justice. Through our discussions and proposed resolutions here at BritMUN, I hope to contribute to putting an end to this unethical practice and bringing about a more just and equitable world."
At BSB Shunyi, we empower our students in becoming changemakers and face challenges head on, developing creative solutions to problems that have remained unanswered for generations. Our students are not only prepared to face the future, but they go out and create their own future with our guidance and expertise to support them.
BritMUN 2025 provided a unique opportunity for our students to build a global network with their peers. With over a hundred delegates from multiple schools, students had the chance to connect with individuals from all over the world, representing over sixty nationalities. These connections will foster their global citizenship and mutual understanding that will serve our students well in their future endeavours.
The growth of the British School of Beijing's MUN club is closely related with our drive to foster global citizenry in every student who walks through our doors. Our MUN club, has gone from a small group of two to now hosting a Beijing-wide conference, the club now houses a wide variety of students from all year groups, even splitting into two CCAs for MUN and MUN Junior, catering to students of all experience levels.
The success of BritMUN 2025 is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students and the joint efforts made by the MUN executive team. As they look ahead to future events, the skills and experiences gained from this year's MUN will undoubtedly continue to have a profound effect.
The theme of this conference transcends country borders, encouraging students to consider the effects of their solutions on people around the world for generations to come. This deepens students’ understanding on topics such as world politics, environmental protection and consolidates a sense of communal responsibility to collective peace.
In summary, BritMUN 2025 was more than just a Model United Nations event; it was a celebration of student initiative, leadership, and global collaboration. The students' dedication to creating a meaningful and impactful conference has not only showcased their abilities but also inspired a sense of global responsibility and cooperation. The British School of Beijing, Shunyi Campus has set a new high standard for future MUN conferences, and the impact of this event will be felt for years to come.
