Year 7 were analysing the amount of chemical energy that is stored in different food types. They set up a simple experiment and burned foodstuffs to measure the amount of thermal energy given off as they burned. This is linked to the amount of energy (Joules/calories) that the food contains. They chose various foods from popcorn to marshmallows, and rice cakes to Pom Bears. It was noticed that nuts burn for a very long time and increase the water temperature by the most - high energy foods!
