THE BIS BUDAPEST KEY STAGE 3 AND IGCSE CURRICULA

Offering a blend of academic excellence and outstanding experiences, our British Key Stage 3 and IGCSE curricula enable our students to take charge of their education, as they become increasingly confident and independent learners. This ensures they achieve great results in their IGCSE exams – and are well-prepared for the challenge of the IB Diploma.

Our Key Stage 3 and IGCSE curricula

Our Key Stage 3 and 4 students follow the English National Curriculum, which culminates in their IGCSE exams at 16.

Engaging, motivating, and packed with exceptional learning experiences, our secondary curriculum provides a balanced education that prepares our students for the rigours of the IBDP.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum supports our students through the transition from primary to secondary school. At this critical stage in their education, specialist subjects embed a deeper knowledge and understanding, preparing them for their IGCSEs.

Our students follow a tailored version of the English National Curriculum, which includes English, Mathematics, science, a world language (either French, German or Spanish), geography, history, ICT, art, PE, and music. Students get a flavour of what it would be like to study each subject at IGCSE level, helping them to make their choices at the end of Year 9.

We encourage active learning and critical thinking, and offer a range of opportunities for students to enhance their communication skills, including taking part in debates and giving presentations. Our students represent the school at various functions and give their peers a voice through our Student Council.

Our Moodle Virtual Learning Environment will play an integral role in your child’s education. Students take part in exciting projects on our Global Campus platform, too, including creative writing, science, and maths challenges. Learning is brought to life by activities outside the classroom, expert visits, specialist talks, and residential trips.

Key Stage 4 IGCSE curriculum (Years 10-11)

At Key Stage 4, our students study for their IGCSEs. This stands for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Your child will follow a tailored curriculum based on their academic strengths and interests, as well as their aspirations for the future.

Choosing your IGCSE subjects

Year 10 is the first opportunity our students have to choose which subjects they’d like to study. As well as compulsory English language, English literature, Mathematics, and science (double award), every student takes part in PSHE and practical PE sessions.

We encourage all our students to study either French, German, or Spanish. We also offer Hungarian for native speakers. We provide IGCSE courses in both music and art and design. We also teach geography, history, business studies, ICT, and PE.

Studying a broad range of subjects enriches our students’ knowledge and cultural understanding, and keeps their options open for the future.

How our students learn

Our IGCSE exam courses are engaging and stimulating, and teaching is personalised to each child’s needs, strengths, and interests. Our approach caters for a variety of learning styles; for students who like to work independently or in a group, as well as those who prefer to get ‘hands-on’ or immerse themselves in theory.

A student’s weekly schedule typically comprises 30 lessons, each of which is 55 minutes long.

Your child will also take part in a variety of activities that complement their academic studies. These include charity work, health education, study skills, and work experience, as well as creative, sporting, social, and service opportunities.

IGCSE exams and grading

IGCSEs are assessed through coursework, practical assessments, and formal examinations. Some components are assessed by our teachers and then externally moderated; others are marked by the exam boards.
