Shane began his career teaching in England where he worked in a range of schools and in various pastoral roles, including Head of Year, Head of House, and Director of Key Stage 4. Whilst working in his last school in Cornwall, he took part in international exchanges in Canada, Thailand, and Australia: this ignited his interest in international teaching. Following this, Shane moved to Budapest and he joined BISB as a Physical Education Teacher in 2019.
As he did in his previous schools, Shane quickly became heavily involved in the pastoral system at BISB and he initially took on the position of Year 10 & 11 Care & Guidance Leader before being promoted to his current role. Shane is deeply passionate about student well-being and is an advocate of restorative justice, a system that he has seen work effectively first-hand during his time at BISB. He is keen to continue the excellent practice already established at BISB, but he is also excited to bring innovative ideas to fruition within the school.
Shane has carried out formal training based around well-being, mental health, student safety, and working with students where English is an additional language, among others. He is keen to ensure that every student he works with has the opportunity to experience a positive, safe, and nurturing school environment. With this in mind, Shane works closely with his Care & Guidance team to help ensure this for the students at BISB.
As an educator, Shane favours a holistic approach that allows students to focus not just on academic success but also their social and emotional development. Further to this, he recognises that mutual respect and kindness are two key principles that help to build strong trust-based relationships with his students. Ultimately, Shane knows that students who feel listened to, cared for and valued are more likely to thrive and thus reach their full potential in all areas of their lives.
Shane is an avid learner and in his spare time he is learning the Hungarian language in addition to studying bass guitar. Outside of school he enjoys spending time with his wife, and they love to travel and listen to live music around Budapest. Unsurprisingly, as a Physical Education teacher he also loves physical activity and regularly paddleboards, cycles and runs.
