Year 10 Trip to Pannonhalma

Year 10 Trip to Pannonhalma - Year 10 Trip to Pannonhalma
On Wednesday 28th of February we visited the  Benedictine Pannonhalma Archabbey to further our knowledge and to have an exciting experience with the topics we have covered. Such as the ‘old and Medieval Hungarian Literature’ and its history.

We were able to see and explore the church, its sub-church and historic library that has over 400 000 books protected and preserved. At the end of our trip, we were able to have a chocolate tasting that the Archabbey makes. The chocolates are filled with spices and oils to help cleanse the body.
We also could admire the St. Martin's Basilica, the medieval main gate – known as Porta Speciosa in Latin – and the roundabout connecting the gate with the church built by King Matthias.

One of the main reasons we went there is to see the  the Founding Charter of the Tihany Abbey (1055), the first known written text to include Hungarian words and phrases. It is in Latin but contains several Hungarian words that state the sentence  “Fehervaru rea meneh hodu utu rea”.
