Primary Maths Week

Primary Maths Week - Primary Maths Week

This week in Primary we have been celebrating maths week with the theme, “Maths in Nature”. The children have been participating in various nature activities that link with the maths unit they are focussing on in class. In EYFS, taking advantage of the leftover pumpkins from Halloween as well as various other natural materials, the children have been doing activities related to measure such as using scales to measure which one is heavier or lighter. In Year 1, the children ave been making part whole models using conkers and various other natural resources from outside. In Year 2, children brought in natural materials from home and used these to look at number bonds as well as to do partitioning and exchanging with addition and subtraction. In Year 3, the children have been sharing and grouping conkers, leaves and other materials to link with their multiplication and division unit. In Year 4, they were learning how to solve a natural world problem by using and applying their knowledge and skills of measurement, perimeter and area in relation to saving the habitats of polar bears from the melting ice floes. In Year 5, the children have been taking their lessons outside to look at fractions in nature and learnt about binary. In Year 6, the children used leaves they collected to look at finding equivalent fractions and looked at designing their own sustainable city making sure the largest fraction of the city was dedicated to nature through green spaces and access to water.

Outside of class there have been many other maths competitions taking place. The competitions were voted for by the students through our smart student council meetings earlier this year.  All week the children have been playing TTrockstars to earn points for their house to see who will be the overall house competition winner. At lunch times, Year 2-6 have been competing in a Maths themed Kahoot challenge. The peers mentors visited the younger students in Year 1 to play maths themed games together. The house captains made morning maths challenges for the younger students in our school and the older students in our school took part in White Rose’s Barvember morning challenges. Year 6 and 7 teamed up to participate in a house competition with various maths games completed in their house teams. In addition, many classes have seen students colouring their own BISB wolf that will be used to make a BISB wolf tessellation mural using the children’s designs.

It was a pleasure to see all the students engage with so many wonderful maths themed activities both in class and at various other times during the week. Based on the feedback in smart student council meetings, we will be seeing further maths themed competitions taking place at various points in the year as the children really have loved engaging in maths!
