In Year 2, we have been learning about how to stay healthy. As part of that topic, we have been learning about keeping our teeth healthy following a visit from a dentist. We conducted an experiment using eggshells to see how different liquids can damage our teeth. Egg shells contain calcium, so they are a good substitute for real teeth. We left the eggs in water, milk, orange juice and coke for two days. We made predictions about what we thought would happen to the eggs. When we removed the eggs from the liquids two days later, we were in for a surprise!
As predicted, the water did not damage the egg. Neither did the milk. The coke stained the eggshell; however, the biggest surprise was from the juice, which eroded the enamel of the eggshell. This demonstrated how our teeth could be damaged if we don't brush them correctly and eat and drink lots of sugary foods. We then recorded our results and came to a conclusion about what the results proved.
