On Saturday 5th March our U19 Girls' Basketball team travelled to the American International School for their final tournament of the season. Competing against girls' Varsity teams from The American International School, Budapest, The American International School, Vienna and The International Christian School, Budapest, the standard was exceptionally high.
Despite some very disciplined defence and varied defensive formations coupled with plenty of scoring opportunities when attacking, our girls lost their first two games against AISB and AISV. Going into their final game against ICSB the girls were more determined than ever to come away with a win, following a defeat against this team earlier in the season.
This was a tight match from start to finish with our girls going ahead in the first quarter but ICSB going into the final quarter with a 7-point lead. Determined to finish strong we changed our defensive formation, pressing earlier and managed to deny any further baskets. This resulted in more turnovers and fast breaks to our attacking end. With a further 10 points on the scoreboard in this final quarter, the girls won the match 20:17 coming away with the third-place trophy.
The girls were also recognised as the team most deserving of the Sportsmanship Award and were presented with this additional team trophy at the end of the tournament. A fantastic end to the season, the girls played exceptionally well showing outstanding physical and mental resilience. I am hugely proud of their commitment to their basketball this season and their progress and performances over the last few months. I look forward to watching this passionate and talented group of girls continue to develop going into the next season.
