The Big Bunting Bonanza

The Big Bunting Bonanza To mark Her Majesty the Queen’s historical 70 years reign we are calling on everyone in our BISB community to take part in our crochet challenge: can we make 70 metres of crochet bunting by Friday 3rd June 2022?

To mark Her Majesty the Queen’s historical 70 years reign we are calling on everyone in our BISB community to take part in our crochet challenge: can we make 70 metres of crochet bunting by Friday 3rd June 2022?

On 6 February 1952, King George VI died following a prolonged illness. Princess Elizabeth immediately acceded to the throne, becoming Queen Elizabeth II and taking on all of the responsibilities which came with her new title. The Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. 2022 marks the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and to celebrate, we are going to make colourful crochet bunting to be displayed in the Auditorium.

Bunting is traditionally used as a celebratory decoration. The earliest bunting was made in the early 1600s and seems to have been related to the flags used on a ship. On a navy ship, the sailor whose job it is to raise the flags is still referred to as a bunt. And how do you crochet one? Don’t worry, it is very easy!

Follow this pattern by Lucy at Attic 24 and using a size 4 needle make as many triangles as you can. Remember, we need 70 metres of bunting so let’s get busy! You can use any leftover wool to make your triangles super colourful. Please get your friends and family involved too!

Once finished, please send your individual triangles to School Reception by Monday, 16 May 2022 to allow enough time to string them all together.
