This week we bring you a brand new CCA for all Secondary students:
Trail Running Club!
Led by David Kennedy and Elizabeth Waller on Mondays from 3:45pm, students have been developing their long distance running skills in the Buda Hills behind school. In their spare time both Mr Kennedy and Mrs Waller are avid trail runners themselves and they were super keen to offer this opportunity to our BISB community. Indeed, after a busy week at school, Mr Kennedy also offers something similarly gratifying (or rather… gruelling!!) - for staff on Fridays as a perfect lead into the weekend!
We caught up with Mr Kennedy to find out more about his passion for running:
''Trail Running Club is a great opportunity for students to explore the beauty of the Buda Hills whilst doing some exercise and getting some fresh air! I would encourage anyone with an interest in running, nature, orientation, team building or a sense of adventure to get involved in the Trail Running Club.
I set up the Trail Running Club because I am very passionate about endurance sports, particularly running, and enjoy exploring nature. From an early age I have been involved in cross country events and over the years running has become a hobby that I love. I have competed in many road and trail marathons around the world, including three world major marathons and one ultramarathon. I have also taken part in many triathlons, cycling events and cycling expeditions; including a three-month cycle across USA.
I hope that Trail Running Club inspires students to challenge themselves and develop an interest in exploring nature.''
Meanwhile, we spoke to one of the students involved in the Trail Running Club, Fruzsina Lakatos in Year 9, to see how things are going:
Mr Swaine: Fruzsi, why did you sign up for this CCA?
Fruzsina: I really like running. It’s the only sport I’m good at and I really enjoy it. Also, I thought it would be exciting to get to know other students in school who like running too. I didn’t just pick it because of my friends.
Mr Swaine: How has it been so far?
Fruzsina: It’s been really exciting. We do different trails each time and it’s really cool to explore off-road trails in the hills. We all support each other when we are running and we never stop talking about different things. Mr Kennedy and Mrs Waller always push us, but they know our limits. Nevertheless, we’re all improving week by week.
Mr Swaine: Would you recommend this CCA to others?
Fruzsina: Yes, definitely! It’s a really good CCA to make new friends. It’s very interesting and it feels so rewarding when you finish a trail each time; particularly coming downhill upon the return. You really feel like you’ve achieved something.
