This week our UNICEF Sustainability group and the UNICEF Year 5 ambassadors presented an update to our school community on BIS Houston’s ongoing drive to be more sustainable.
They highlighted the great news from the BOMA where we have transitioned from using plastic, disposable plates and cutlery to washable utensils and plates. This is all thanks to the school’s Flik Team, who worked to repair our broken dishwasher to reduce the average amount of waste produced by BIS Houston students.
The group promoted the schools ongoing recycling of paper, cardboard, water bottles and pens and launched our new recycling station located in the reception area, where children can visit to litter pick our school grounds.
Another unique approach to reducing the amount of waste BIS Houston produces is the implementation of recycling bins for batteries. Batteries can have substantial effects on ecosystems if they are improperly disposed of. By being able to recycle them, however, we could have a large effect on the waste that enters landfills and the ocean. The battery bins are already set up and next to the new recycling station near the double doors opposite the reception area.
