We learn better, together!

We are proud of how we prepare our students for success at university/college and their potential, future career. Our academic pathways open doors to anywhere, our well-rounded students walk through those doors and thrive.  And part of that story is we are better, together.  Our BIS Houston College Counsellors are staying connect-ed with our global family of sister schools from British International School of Boston and Washington collaborating on exciting development of College Counseling, education offers and innovative practice.

The National Association of College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) held its 78thnational conference in Houston, Texas between September 22-24, 2022. The theme of the conference was ‘Resilience’. With that framework in mind, college counselors from the British International Schools of Boston, Houston, and Washington D.C organized a professional development roundtable discussion held on September 21st.

Attendees, which included Marie Vivas, Senior Development Manager, IBO; International Recruitment Managers from UK universities; and secondary school counselors from the greater Houston community and beyond, convened at the University of St. Thomas to discuss a range of topics including how college counselors can be agents for change to minimize the frenzy during the university application process, the strength and flexibility of the IB curriculum, how that flexibility allows teachers to reconnect with a passion they once possessed for a particular subject, and how the IBDP, IB Certificates, and IBCP are viewed globally by universities in comparison to A-Levels and APs.

During our forward-thinking discussion, Ms. Vivas shared that new focal points of the IBO are centered around the students’ well-being and how to better serve schools. Regardless of their pathway, Ms. Vivas stated that “every student benefits from learning in an IB environment.”. Feedback from attendees was very positive and by all accounts, the event was a great way to begin the NACAC conference and collaborate with colleagues.
