Being a UNICEF USA student volunteer at BIS Houston is about their passion for our world’s children and helping to make a difference. In today’s world, there are many social, environmental, and political issues that impact the lives of children all over the globe. By participating in the UNICEF club, students are able to advocate for and raise awareness of these issues, so our school can play a role in creating well rounded global citizens. They are the next generation of world leaders, and through this position, learn about what it means to work with likeminded individuals to make our community a better place. They help plan and execute school wide fundraisers, whilst working with the high school UNICEF USA Club to arrange school wide campaigns.
Last year the BIS Houston student UNICEF USA Club led a host of impressive fundraising projects events from Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF, to going blue for the Blue Dot Appeal, to taking over the school’s social media channels for World Children’s Day. Our inspiring students impressively raised over $15,000 and hope to be nominated for the prestigious George Harrison Award for making a difference to support UNICEF.
Students at BIS Houston are empowered to become changemakers who help make the world a better place.
They are globally minded and actively involved in learning about sustainability and global issues and take every opportunity to make a meaningful, positive impact on the community around them. BIS Houston embeds the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in all aspects of teaching and learning, using materials developed by UNICEF.
We want children around the world to be empowered to make a difference, both in their local communities and globally. Our collaboration with UNICEF USA helps us do this by developing challenges and learning materials based on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that allow them to think practically about how to effect real change.
These SDGs form the basis of our Social Impact Programme and our annual Global Challenge. This is a chance for our students to take on projects like recycling, making positive change in the local community – even learning how to turn plants into biofuel. We also use activities surrounding World Children’s Day to educate our students about their rights, how to protect them, and how to advocate for those who may not have a voice.
For students interested in the policy side of making a difference, UNICEF gives them the opportunity to meet and interact with UN and government leaders at the UN High-Level Political Platform (HLPF). Student ambassadors who attend can participate in seminars and workshops, as well as getting the unique chance to speak at the UN’s headquarters in New York.
