BIS Houston Walks for Water: Global Citizenship in Action

Inspired by A Long Walk to Water  - a powerful true story of resilience and hope - our Year 5 students at BIS Houston have taken meaningful steps to create change far beyond the classroom.

The book tells the parallel stories of Salva Dut, one of the 3,800 Sudanese “Lost Boys” airlifted to the United States in the mid-1990s, and Nya, a young girl living in a water-scarce village in present-day South Sudan. Salva’s journey of survival, courage, and determination ultimately led him to found Water for South Sudan, an organization that installs deep-water wells in communities in desperate need of clean water.

Moved by Salva’s story, our students took on the Walk for Water challenge, walking to simulate the distance children like Nya must travel each day to collect water. Led by our dedicated Year 5 team, this initiative raised awareness and inspired action across our school community.

We're incredibly proud to share that our students are now approaching the $5,000 fundraising mark - an amazing achievement that reflects their passion, empathy, and commitment to global citizenship.

Even more exciting, we’ve received the news that BIS Houston is eligible for a partial well sponsorship through the Water for South Sudan programme. This means our students’ efforts will contribute directly to bringing safe, clean water to a village in need -  a tangible and lasting impact that will change lives.

To quote Water for South Sudan:
“Please tell your students I said I'm proud of them and their outstanding global citizenship.”

Congratulations to our Year 5 change-makers and the wider BIS Houston community for stepping up, walking with purpose, and showing what it means to create your future - and help others do the same.
