Two year 12 students, Niio and Nina recently had the opportunity to participate in the Thailand Junior Water Prize (TJWP) 2024. Representing St Andrews International School Bangkok, they showcased a design concept reflecting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, with a focus on water management and water pollution. They were an absolute credit to our school and presented their design brilliantly.
The Thailand Junior Water Prize is a competition that encourages students to come up with innovative solutions to real-world environmental challenges. The contest selects the best design produced by High School students and is presided by industry experts.
Niio and Nina, both in Year 12, approached their IB Design & Technology teacher, Ms Holly, to be their mentor for the project. However, the project was entirely student-led, with the students working tirelessly to develop a unique and user-centred approach to their design. Their concept, a modular bridge with a compliant mechanism and modular filters, aimed to address SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Their hard work paid off as their design and research were selected to go through to the Thailand Finals, held at the Ambassador Hotel on 1st and 2nd May 2024. Despite not winning the competition, Niio and Nina impressed the judges with their confidence in presenting and their ability to engage with industry experts, some of whom who took an interest in their concept and wanted to work more on the idea.
While Niio and Nina may not have taken home the top prize, the knowledge gained from their experience at the Thailand Junior Water Prize was invaluable. They showcased their innovation, resilience, and ability to think critically about real-world issues on environmental sustainability. They pushed themselves, did their best, and fully embodied the IB learner profile, making all of us at St Andrews very proud.
St Andrews High School Students from Years 7 and 8 had a very enjoyable and successful week working on their STEAM MIT Global Challenge: designing a plant that could cope with extreme weather phenomenons in Thailand.
From project start to completion, the students were immersed in marine sustainability, finding solutions which address environmental challenges related to building and implementing artificial coral reefs. Their interdisciplinary work focused on coral reef restoration off the coast of Rayong. Designed to showcase their hard work and present these innovative solutions to experts within the marine field, the project has been supported by Thai Ocean Academy and Aow Thai Marine Ecology Centre (ATMEC), who were also in attendance at the event.
