On Friday 10th November, Year 9 students finally got to present their Artificial Reefs during the much-anticipated STEAM Expo at St Andrews International School Bangkok, High School. At the event were crowds of parents, teachers, and fellow students, all engaging in fascinating discussions over coral reefs and marine sustainability.
The Year 9 Artificial Reef Project involves students working on innovative solutions related to coral-related issues in Thailand. This topic incorporates all aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) while raising awareness about environmental concerns.
From project start to completion, the students were immersed in marine sustainability, finding solutions which address environmental challenges related to building and implementing artificial coral reefs. Their interdisciplinary work focused on coral reef restoration off the coast of Rayong. Designed to showcase their hard work and present these innovative solutions to experts within the marine field, the project has been supported by Thai Ocean Academy and Aow Thai Marine Ecology Centre (ATMEC), who were also in attendance at the event.
The students worked diligently during the first half of the term, and the Expo provided them the opportunity to share their ideas with the greater St Andrews community. The Expo included interactive demonstrations, presentations, and displays of the artificial reef prototypes. Not only did this event highlight the students’ achievements, it also gave them the chance to encourage environmental consciousness and support for sustainable solutions.
At St Andrews International School Bangkok, we aim to develop great thinkers and innovators. Delivered on Nord Anglia’s Global Campus, our collaboration with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) offers students an immersion into STEAM via experiential learning.
STEAM education recognises that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills, which are best developed through exposure to the Arts. Creativity and thinking outside the box lead to great discoveries that impact our world in amazing ways. Project-based, interdisciplinary, and up-to-date with current global topics, these STEAM projects provide students with a lifelong foundation for curiosity and real-world problem solving.
With our hands-on approach and supportive environment at St Andrews, we ensure our bright students develop skills essential for success in the 21st century.
