In Term 2 of their Design and Technology (DT) curriculum, Year 8 students delved into sustainable architecture, expanding their understanding of environmentally conscious design principles. Students had the unique opportunity to venture beyond the classroom and visit two architectural sites. Guided by their curiosity, they engaged with the architect, immersing themselves in the innovative designs and construction techniques employed. Notably, they discovered how these buildings utilised unconventional materials such as earth and locally sourced rubber wood plywood, showcasing the potential for sustainable living practices.
During the exclusive trip, students not only witnessed firsthand the application of sustainable architectural concepts but also gained insight into the creative process behind these structures. Meeting with the architect provided a valuable opportunity for students to ask questions and deepen their understanding of the design choices made to enhance sustainability. Exploring the architectural sites allowed them to appreciate the fusion of functionality, aesthetics, and environmental consciousness, inspiring them to consider the impact of their own future designs and choices on the planet.
Overall, the excursion served as a catalyst for students to envision a future where sustainability is at the forefront of architectural innovation. By experiencing firsthand the possibilities of eco-friendly design, students were empowered to think critically about their role in shaping a more sustainable world. This journey into sustainable architecture not only enriched their DT curriculum but also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards environmental stewardship, setting a promising trajectory for their future endeavours.
St Andrews High School Students from Years 7 and 8 had a very enjoyable and successful week working on their STEAM MIT Global Challenge: designing a plant that could cope with extreme weather phenomenons in Thailand.
From project start to completion, the students were immersed in marine sustainability, finding solutions which address environmental challenges related to building and implementing artificial coral reefs. Their interdisciplinary work focused on coral reef restoration off the coast of Rayong. Designed to showcase their hard work and present these innovative solutions to experts within the marine field, the project has been supported by Thai Ocean Academy and Aow Thai Marine Ecology Centre (ATMEC), who were also in attendance at the event.
We are thrilled to announce that St Andrews International School Bangkok has been selected to host the VEX Signature Event in November 2024. This prestigious international event, organised by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation (RECF), will welcome 70 teams of young students aged 7 to 15 from the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions.
