Teachers can find a balance between nurturing creativity and raising achievement at the same time. Allowing students to explore ideas and themes in new ways is key to unlocking creative potential.

Sir Ken Robinson PhD, International Education Advisor, Professor of Arts Education and presenter of one of the most watched TED talks of all time says “Creativity is as important as literacy. Human resources are like natural resources; they are often buried deep...You have to create the circumstances where they show themselves.”

Through dance and performing arts we can connect the mind and body and by doing so we demonstrate an understanding of an idea does not have to be confined to verbal articulation or a written response. Movement often provides a way for students to express themselves when they cannot find the words.

Physical exploration does not need to be confined to a dance studio, and teachers from all subject areas can use the benefits of movement-based discovery and the creativity that comes from everyday teaching.

Students are invited to develop creative thinking skills. In an ever-changing world, being versatile, adaptable and thinking outside the box is invaluable. It creates a way to access the learning and encourages students to draw from the rich melting pot of ideas that already exist in the room.

Creativity in the classroom doesn't look perfect. Sometimes it can be messy and unfinished, but it is always done with intention. Intention makes the learning meaningful and meaningful learning raises academic outcomes.

The performing arts play an important role in enriching student lives at Regents. Taking part in theatre or music is a powerful way for young people to express themselves, explore the human condition, learn new skills and make friends, so we encourage all our students to get involved. We collaborate with The Juilliard School, a world leader in performing arts education, to enhance our programme.
