THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME (HIGH SCHOOL AT MET PANAMA)

During the last two years of High School at the Metropolitan School of Panama, we teach the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The gold standard of international education, our global curricular framework builds upon the IB Middle Years Programme, expertly preparing our students for college, university, and life as a global citizen.

THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL IN PANAMA CITY

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a challenging two-year course of study for senior High School students in Grades 11 and 12.

Widely regarded as the world’s leading pre-university program, the IB Diploma is a comprehensive High School curriculum that blends intensive academic study with unique opportunities for personal growth. IB students complete three core elements – the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) – and study six subjects, which they take at either a higher (HL) or standard level (SL).

IB SUBJECT GROUPS

At our world-leading IB High School in Panama, students choose their IB Diploma subjects from six groups.

Students must choose one subject from each of Groups 1 to 5, ensuring a breadth of experience. The sixth course can either be taken from Group 6 (The Arts), or they can select an additional option from one of the other five groups. 
The Diploma Programme’s six subject groups are:
  • Studies in language and literature
  • Language acquisition
  • Individuals and societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The arts

CORE ELEMENTS OF THE IBDP

In addition to their chosen IB Diploma subjects, your child will also complete the core IB program. This is designed to broaden their experience, develop their skills, and prepare them for life at university and beyond.

  • The Extended Essay (EE) is a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they’re studying.
  • Theory of Knowledge (ToK) is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language, and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical, and historical).
  • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) requires students to actively learn from the experience of doing real service tasks that create a positive impact in a community beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.
