After graduating from Anglia Ruskin University, Matthew Joyes worked as a Teaching Assistant at a Primary School in Lincolnshire, where he worked in Years 1 and 3, and worked as a 1-1 with a child with cerebral palsy in Reception. After working there for a year, Matthew applied for and completed a PGCE in Primary Teaching at Bishop Grosseteste University.
Initially, Matthew taught at a local school in Lincolnshire, teaching Years 4 and 5. Here, he became the subject leader of History and coached the school’s football and cricket teams. In 2016, Matthew moved to Qatar where he taught Year 6 at Nord Anglia, becoming Year Leader, and mentoring a Newly Qualified Teacher in his second year there. In 2018, Matthew moved to Hong Kong and became a founding member of Malvern College where he worked within a team who explored how Mathematics can successfully be implemented across all year levels.
Matthew believes in allowing and encouraging student agency, looking for them to start and drive their own inquiries across all subjects. Matthew teaches with a focus on conceptual understanding and connections to real life, which is then complemented with specific knowledge skills.
Outside of school, Matthew is a keen footballer having played at a competitive level in England, Qatar, and Hong Kong. He spent his time in Hong Kong making the most of the trails on offer completing all four main trails and can often be found in the gym.
