Claire Powell

Assistant Head of Primary
Claire-Powell

Having completed her first degree in Politics & European Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, Claire worked in insurance before moving back to London in order to successfully complete her PGCE in Primary Education at Kingston University.

Claire then spent the next 10 years working in schools across London, teaching children from a range of different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Beginning her career in Year 3, she has since had the pleasure of being able to teach extensively across Key Stage 2.

Passionate about curriculum development and quality assessment practices, she has developed her career; taking on a range of leadership positions focused on improving teaching and learning across Key Stages 1 and 2, whilst still maintaining her love of classroom teaching. Claire was asked to support the London Borough of Wandsworth with assessment and moderation practices, which enabled her to work with colleagues across south London. It is Claire’s belief that all children should have access to an education that fosters creativity, curiosity, passion, global awareness, kindness and honesty, as well as academic excellence.

In 2016, Claire was appointed as Deputy Head teacher at a school in south-west London. It was here that her interest and experience in working with and teaching SEND learners developed further, as it was fortunate to also be home to a specialist resource base for children with moderate learning difficulties, from Nursery to Year 6. Here, Claire was able to develop her teaching skills further to accommodate the additional needs of the children in her care. She worked closely with external specialists and colleagues to develop high standards of teaching and learning as well as challenging and accessible curriculum for all. As such one of the factors which initially attracted Claire to working at Dover Court was its inclusive nature and the integration model celebrated by the school community.
