Carla Hyland

Deputy Head – Teaching & Learning
Carla-Hyland

Carla has a BSc (Hons) in Law and Psychology and a PGCE (Secondary) in Citizenship both from the London Metropolitan University. She started teaching in Hackney, London, gaining valuable teaching experience in a challenging and diverse community, as well as leadership experience within her subject faculty of Humanities.

Working in an inner city school gave Carla valuable experience of working with students from a diverse range of backgrounds, as well as those with challenging social, emotional and behavioural needs. This environment fostered her love for inclusive education and a firm belief that it provides a richer educational experience for all students. Developing opportunities for all students to be successful and achieve their full potential has become a key driver for any change she has led at all levels.

Her background as a citizenship teacher has continued to drive her passion for student advocacy, global citizenship and the importance of intercultural learning. Hearing from young people about what inspires them, excites them, and worries them about the future is something that continues to motivate Carla to initiate curriculum development and adapt the learning journey for her students.

Itchy feet and experience of international living in her own childhood attracted Carla to move internationally and she arrived at Dover Court in 2011. She was attracted to Dover Court due to its inclusive nature and its potential to be the leading school in Singapore for inclusive education, as well as supporting students to achieve outstanding results in external examinations. She has been a member of the school leadership team since 2017 and has been a key driver in the outstanding growth of the secondary school.

One of her great passions in life is travel. Whilst growing up she travelled a lot and gained experience of life in Nigeria, Malawi, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. As a result it was of little surprise to her family when she told them she  was relocating half way across the world to Singapore! Since moving to Singapore she has continues to travel extensively whenever possible, learned how to scuba dive and has attempted to learn all types of regional cuisines taking courses in Indian, Cambodian, Thai, and Vietnamese cooking.
