A Community of Compassionate Leaders

A Community of Compassionate Leaders - 20 CDS Directors Blog

I've been reflecting on sharing this story with our wider community because I believe it truly reflects who our students are, and it speaks volumes about you as parents for raising such remarkable individuals.

I’ll do my best to share this story while respecting student anonymity, but it may be one of the most impactful interactions I’ve ever had with a student.

Last week, a secondary student, who is part of one of our sports teams, came to see me about the prize money the team won in a recent tournament. Over the past six months, they’ve been considering various ways the prize could be used to purchase equipment that would support the team’s development and improve their chances at AASCA next year. However, this conversation took me by surprise. The student wasn’t asking for permission to spend the prize money on equipment but instead wanted to donate it to a classmate who has been facing a serious medical challenge. As a team, they had unanimously decided to use their winnings to support this student in any way they could.

When we talk about the profile of our graduates and the attributes we hope our students will have by the time they leave us, this is what we mean. Together, as a school and a community of parents, we’ve fostered a group of compassionate young people who care deeply about one another and put others first in times of need.

I wish I could share more details so the full significance of the situation would be clear. But as I write this, I am overcome with pride, and tears fall down my face. I am deeply grateful that my family is part of this incredible community of young leaders.
