Exciting Week at the Panther Den!

This week was a busy one for the Panther Sports Teams.  This past Tuesday the 26th of March our grade 4 and 5 boys and girls basketball team played at the Blue Valley School losing by a score of 30-10 .  They were at it again on Thursday, with the whole ES crew in attendance and lost another heartbreaker to Saint Jude, this time by one point, 12-11. We are poised for our next game and will be stronger as grade 5 leader Isa Ugalde is up for the challenge of leading her team to victory.

This past Monday our grade 1 and 2 Panthers soccer team screamed by a strong Lighthouse team 8 - 1.  It was a fast-paced game that saw all 20+ members of the team contributing to the victory. Standout performances by second graders Andre Ruiz and Isaac “El Campeon” Carvajal lead the charge for the Jr. Panthers.  We are ready for our next opponent and expect big things from our up and coming grade 1 players.

Our ES Lady Panthers soccer club battled in the heat of the day last Thursday against a tough International Christian School resulting in a 1-0 loss.  Lady Panthers were led by strong performances by all players from grade 2 through 5 in front of a sold out student section. It was a matter of just running out of time for the ES Lady Panthers but they have their eyes on victory as they prepare for their next match. Team leaders Emma Kupferschmied and Nina Carrasco are looking to bring victory back to the Panther Den in their next match.

Upcoming events include the ES Panthers Volleyball squad, who will be playing at the Lighthouse school this Monday, April 1 beginning at 3pm.  Please come out and cheer on our Panthers!!

ES Author of the Week

This week we would like to highlight some of the amazing poetry from our grade three students.  Please enjoy and we would love to hear what you think. Comments about the author of the week can be sent to our ES literacy coach Ms. Cassandra Bruington at cassandra_bruington@cds.ed.cr.

Upcoming Trips to Parque Marino

This week we will be heading to Puntarenas on a learning visit to the Parque Marino.  All ES grade levels will be heading to “El Puerto” for this amazing experience. The schedule is as follows:

  • Prep and grade 1: Tuesday April 2.  The youngest of our family will be visiting the park and experiencing a workshop called, “ Tortugas: Don Pulpo.”

  • Grades 4 and 5: Thursday, April 4.  These students will enjoy a tour and the workshop called, “Contaminacion de los Oceanos.”

  • Grades 2 and 3: Friday, April 5.  These students will enjoy a tour and the workshop called, “Tortugas: De terrestres y marinas.”

Please remember this is a full day trip.  We are leaving CDS at 8am and leaving Puntarenas at 1pm to be back at school with plenty of time before dismissal.  Students may wear their PE uniforms and should remember to bring a snack and lunch to the trip, as well as plenty of water.

The Panther Way in the ES House

As you all know, our Elementary School Code of Behavior, the Panther Way, is threaded through every aspect of our school community.  The fundamental aspect of the Panther Way is based on respect; Respecting others, Respecting yourself and Respecting our environment.  These very generalized expectations have been articulated out by each grade level in developmentally appropriate ways in an effort to clearly establish expectations in grade 1 through grade 5.  Working in concurrence with our code of behavior, all teachers, counselor and administrator is charged with implementing logical/ natural consequences when behavioral expectations are not met. Some examples of these logical/ natural consequences include, but are not limited to:

  • Removal from the area: classroom, cafeteria, recess area where behavior takes place: ½ day, full day, whatever time period is appropriate

  • Written reflection

  • Learning essay based on research connected to the infraction

  • May not be able to participate in after-school activities/ sports

  • Contribute to the school  Jobs around the school

In all instances, we look to work collaboratively with families to help students learn from their behavior and how it affects the greater classroom or house community.  This approach to discipline is non-traditional and aims to find the root of behavior issues and support students in their journey to grow as empathetic individuals in our school and global community.  We are all guided by our belief statement on discipline, which reads:

CDS Elementary strives to work in close alliance with families to ground students with strong values. Through clear expectations, modeling, practice and relationship building, teachers and students create a safe and positive environment where self-awareness, self-regulation, and accountability are developed through reinforcement, reflection, and logical consequences.  We support students in making choices that demonstrate respect for ourselves, others and our environment, understanding that each skill effects and strengthens the others.

We look forward to working collaboratively with all ES families in helping to educate our students and help support them in their growth.
