Nicola Head Message
Week 12, Term 2, 2024/2025
This week, I had the pleasure of being involved in the interviews for next year’s Head Students.

The shortlisted candidates displayed not only passion for the role but also a genuine dedication to improving our school. At BSKL, the role of Head Student is a cornerstone of our student leadership programme and plays a vital part in shaping the culture and direction of our school community. Head Students are more than just role models—they are ambassadors, advocates, and active contributors to school life.

Selected through a rigorous application and interview process, our Head Students demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities, integrity, and a strong commitment to the values of the school. They represent the voice of the student body and work closely with school leaders to support a positive and inclusive environment.

One of the primary responsibilities of a Head Student is to lead one of the following development strands: Be Creative, Be of Service, Be Competitive, and Be Active. As the lead for a given strand, the Head Student coordinates initiatives that promote excellence in that area across the school. Whether organising events, mentoring younger students, or speaking at assemblies and school functions, Head Students play a key role in building community spirit and encouraging student engagement.

Moreover, the experience of being a Head Student is a powerful developmental opportunity. It cultivates confidence, communication skills, resilience, and a sense of responsibility—all of which are essential attributes for future success in higher education and beyond.

By giving students a meaningful voice and a platform to influence change, we not only enhance their personal growth but also enrich the wider school environment. The presence of strong student leaders inspires others, models positive behaviours, and ensures that our values are lived every day.

We are incredibly proud of our current Head Students—Matthew, Shumala, and Idries—and thank them for the example they have set for their peers. They have been instrumental in shaping the partnership between students and staff, and each of them has grown immensely as a leader. Their contributions are a testament to the strength and potential of student leadership at BSKL.

As we celebrate their successes, we also warmly welcome our new cohort of Head Students for the 2025–26 academic year. I’m sure I speak for our entire community in congratulating Lauren Xin Tong Yee, Toby Tin-E Yuen, Kiana Sathyanarayanan, and Merjaan Bede Gill. We look forward to seeing the energy, ideas, and leadership they will bring to the role.
