PE and school sport at BSKL
At the British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL), we offer one of the most varied and dynamic school sport programmes in Malaysia.
Primary
The BSKL primary PE curriculum runs from pre-nursery to Year 6 and is based on the English National Curriculum. Our aim is to foster an enthusiasm for sport and fitness through positive PE experiences.
Pre-nursery, nursery and reception (2 to 5-year-olds)
Children learn through exploration, experimentation, and play. Our students are introduced to a broad curriculum, which includes: simplified elements of gymnastics, ball skills, athletics, and yoga. They grow in confidence and competence in a range fundamental movements as we lay the building blocks on which to build more complex skills in later years.
Key Stage 1 (5 to 7-year-olds)
In Years 1 and 2, children develop coordination, running, jumping, agility, and throwing skills. These are contextualised through a variety of sports to help children understand their importance and concept of transferable skills. Students compete as an individual or work with their peers as they begin to learn to win, lose, and compete with sportsmanship and integrity.
Key Stage 2 (7 to 11-year-olds)
Our Year 3 students transition from learning developmental to technical skills. Students enjoy a wider range of sports and learn the basic skills to play. They also begin to collaborate and compete in teams.
In Year 4, students further develop their technical understanding. Sports increase in complexity between Years 3 and 4, moving from short tennis to badminton, for example. Students become more aware of their role within a team through small sided-games.
In Years 5 and 6, students refine their technical skills and are challenged to apply them to competitive play. Self, peer, and group analysis is used as part of our Assessment For Learning (AFL) policy, which encourages students to manage their own progress and become independent learners.
Secondary
Curriculum outcomes
Our desired outcome is that every student who graduates from BSKL has the confidence and level of physical competence to remain involved in some form of physical activity or exercise for the remainder of their adult life.
Curriculum aims
A high-quality PE curriculum inspires our students to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and embed values such as fairness and respect.
The national PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
The PE curriculum can be found here.
Assessment
The core values we assess at BSKL are:
- Knowledge and understanding
- Engagement
- Fitness
- Sportsmanship
- Leadership
- Skillset (40)
A breakdown of the grade boundaries can be found here.
Importance of assessment
Assessment is a key component of education because it helps our students learn. When they're able to see how they're doing in class, they're able to determine whether or not they understand what they were taught. Assessment can also motivate students to improve on the skills and qualities they have been developing.
House sports
Every year, BSKL students take part in Inter-House sports days and swimming galas, giving them the chance to experience competition, sportsmanship, and team spirit. Inter-House competitions are an important part of BSKL school life and are renowned for being lively events!
Primary
Competition activities are age-appropriate. Our younger students demonstrate motor skills such as throwing, catching and jumping, while our older students take part in more direct competition in track and field events.
Secondary
Our secondary students compete in a variety of House sports throughout the year, including, football, tag rugby, volleyball, rounders, track and field, and more.
Current parents can access all the house sports events and dates on the parent app.
