BSB students benefit from the Nord Anglia-Juilliard Performing Arts Programme that is built into our daily curriculum. It is unique to Nord Anglia schools and has an emphasis on creativity and engagement with the arts for everyone.
Juilliard Professional Development for our Teachers
Recently, our Head of Arts, Daren Burns and Drama teacher Ciarán McLaughlin, attended a 4-day workshop together with over 40 Nord Anglia performing arts teachers to learn about the Juilliard method of instruction and how to use the Creative Classroom curriculum.
The event was hosted by The Juilliard School and NACIS Shanghai from 17th to 20th October. It was facilitated by Juilliard Drama, Music, and Dance Specialist Nick Mahmat, Ashley Renee Watkins and Richard Mannoia, and Salla Saarikangas-Kramer, respectively.
The workshop included courses on inquiry-based teaching, classroom observations, using reflection, using guided questioning, and how to use the resources issued from Juilliard.
Head of Arts Mr. Burns said, “Through this workshop, I was able to interact with a host of Nord Anglia Arts teachers, learn how to refine my teaching, and how to implement Juilliard courses into our pre-existing curriculum.”
Drama teacher Mr. McLaughlin stated, “It was a rewarding experience, and it was great to collaborate and share ideas with other artists across the NAE family. To see the Juilliard classes in action and reflect on how we can best implement new ideas and keep improving our own classes was truly inspiring. Art has an important place in a well-rounded education, and I look forward to the future.”
Juilliard Creative Classroom for our students
Let’s visit a Year 11 Drama class to see how it’s put into practice.
Students took part in a Juilliard Creative Classrooms lesson focusing on the traditions of Greek Chorus. They were learning to understand the power of moving and speaking in complete unison. They also created their own Greek Chorus performance based on text from the Oedipus myth.
"Answer the call of mortal man.
Aid us in our time of need.
Stand at the gates of our hearts.
Stand and defend us from harm."

We look forward to more interaction with Juilliard in the coming years and raising the level of our Performing Arts Programme now and into the future!
