Students in Reception Class and Year 5 had a very exciting journey into space with Dr Emmet Golden-Marx, an astronomer and astrophysicist at Tsinghua University on 22nd February!
During the Year 5 presentation, Dr. Emmet told us all about how he studies black holes, the stars and even the multiverse! The Year 5 teachers were incredibly impressed with the questions that the students asked- they demonstrated great curiosity and interest in this presentation.
For the Reception Class, Dr. Emmet spoke a little bit about his job and showed some photos taken by space probes and giant telescopes of outer space.
Children had the opportunity to ask Dr. Emmet questions about space such as "Why is Neptune so cold?" "How hot is the sun?" "Why is part of Pluto red?" and "What planet has the most volcanos?"
Some children also wanted to share their own knowledge based on what they have learnt about space. One child explained how the moon and earth formed, which Mr Emmet expanded on. Another child shared that all the planets revolve around the sun, which caused someone else to share that the sun is a star.
This was such a nice opportunity for the children to have their questions answered and learn about a different field of science. Maybe we have some future astronomers or astronauts in our midst.
