Our students have had the exciting opportunities to participate in 2 Short Story Competitions recently!

BSB students can regularly learn together with students globally in many sports, academic, MIT and performing arts competitions as part of Nord Anglia Education’s family of 80+ schools and as members of many internationally reputable organisations.

2022 FOBISIA Short Story Competition: The Mystery

BSB students were invited to enter the 2022 FOBISIA Short Story Competition, which had over 90 international schools across Asia involved.

  • Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) is a not-for-profit membership organisation founded in 1988. It is the premier federation supporting and promoting high-quality British education in Asia with member schools spanning 19 countries including Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • The Competition allowed two entries from each school to be entered and we are still waiting to find out if we have won! Winners will be announced on World Book Day  (2nd March 2023).
  • The competition rules were simple – create a short story of no more than 1200 words entitled ‘The Mystery’. The last line of the story had to be, ‘Who would notice we were gone?’

Our BSB Entries!

The two lucky entries selected from the BSB Shunyi were from Gabriella Wilson (Year 9) and Audrey Hao (Year 9). They were chosen for their highly-stylised compositions and imaginative stories. We are lucky to have such students at our school. Please see some highlights of their works below.

Global Campus Short Story Competition: A One-Third Story

BSB students also participate in the Global Campus competition with students from 80 other Nord Anglia school. Click here for details.

  • Global Campus is Nord Anglia’s unique online learning platform, where students from our schools around the world learn and develop their problem-solving and creative thinking skills including exclusive collaborations with MIT, Juilliard and UNICEF.
  • The challenge for this was to create a bi-lingual short story, in which students would begin the story in English and then slowly introduce a second language of their choice, in 350 words or under. Students had to imagine their reader was of primary school age.
  • This also involved putting together a glossary, an alphabetical list of the new words introduced. The topic options for our students were: colours, food, directions and place, transport or clothes.

Our BSB Entries!

Rachel Guo (Year 8) was our chosen entry, for her story entitled, ‘Rainbows & Hills’. She managed to create a story about a little boy named John, which begins in English and then slowly introduces Chinese. The reader is able to learn the Chinese equivalent of these words (Rachel also provided pinyin in the glossary, to help with readers who have no or little knowledge of Chinese.

We are very proud of Rachel. She is a very imaginative student, who has previously produced creative writing of great skill and talent.
