This term, our Early Years children have embarked on an exciting journey into the world of storytelling through our unit, 'Tell Me a Story'. Rather than limiting them to a single genre, we have intentionally kept this theme broad to ignite their creativity and imagination. Each classroom looks a little different, as we follow the children’s interests and ideas, allowing them to take the lead in their learning.
Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do, and it extends far beyond literacy. It is transdisciplinary, meaning children naturally integrate their knowledge of phonics into storytelling, create maths stories, and weave in elements of science, curiosity, and their understanding of the world. Whether they’re acting out adventures, building story settings in construction, or illustrating their own books, they are constantly developing essential skills in a meaningful and engaging way.
We have been exploring the features of books, learning about how stories are structured, and diving into what makes characters and settings come to life. Through interactive experiences, drama, and open-ended play, the children are discovering that stories can be told in endless ways - not just through words, but through movement, art, and even music.
By providing them with the tools and opportunities to tell their own stories, we are nurturing confident communicators, creative thinkers, and passionate storytellers. We are lucky that Book Week has also fallen within this Unit because we have had so many wonderful parents offer their time to come and read to the children.
