This week we celebrated Book Week! The Year 1s had a brilliant time doing different activities based around Book Week.
To begin the week, we introduced our new story ‘The Snail and the Whale’ written by a very famous female author, Julia Donaldson. Our first lesson was based around rhyming words. We discussed what rhyming words were and searched for all the rhyming words used in our story. The children did an excellent job at finding most of them!
For the rest of the week, we concentrated on the setting. We used adjectives to describe the different places the snail and the whale went. Year 1 really showed off their vocabulary when describing the settings as we had phrases like ‘the warm, sunny beach’, ‘the cold, icy mountains’, ‘the deep, dark sea’ and many many more.
We also had a great time meeting the female author, Sarah Roberts. We had an amazing assembly where Sarah showed us all the great animals she has encountered over the last 10 years and what she does to help look after the animals.
She also read us a special story she wrote, all about how to keep our rivers and waters clean. The story was called ‘Somebody Crunched Colin’. The Year 1s has so many questions about all her experiences and she was extremely impressed with all the knowledge they were able to share during the assembly.
To end the week, it was great to see everyone dressed up as their favourite characters from the books we have read. On Thursday, the teachers dressed up as Wally from the 'Where’s Wally' books.
How many Wallys can you find in our Year 1 picture?
