As part of our science unit on Living Things and their Habitats, the Year 2 students have been learning how food chains work.
They used their collaborative skills, working well in groups to create a series of simple food chains. All of the students tried their best to use scientific vocabulary to describe the producer, consumer, prey and predators in each food chain. They added arrows to show the energy being transferred and were introduced to organisms such as plankton, coral sea snakes, shrews and blue tits for the first time.
There were great discussions about which animals ate each other and how some animals need to get their energy from lots of different sources of food. This led on to talking about what happens when there becomes more or less of one animal in the chain and how it can affect the whole chain.
Finally, linked to our ‘Who lives under the sea?’ topic, the students had a go at the challenge to make food chains with marine plants and animals.
