Maths Week 2018
Monday got off to an exciting start with the launch of the BISB Maths Week Code Breaking competition. At the time of writing, over 248 different entries have been received from staff, parents and students and the level of ingenuity shown has been absolutely outstanding. The winners of each of the three categories will be announced at the beginning of next week, along with the solution to each of the five codes.

Our students have enthusiastically been involved in a wide range of activities including lunchtime relays and treasure hunts and various quizzes during morning registration. Wednesday afternoon saw Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 taking place in a mathematical house relay competition, with Year 5 also taking part on Thursday morning. With teams of students racing up and down the gym in their eagerness to solve various mathematical problems, it truly was a sight to behold, and the ‘dingbats’ round proved to be particularly amusing.
We were lucky enough to have Zoe Griffiths, our guest presenter, return again this year to run a series of talks and workshops. Years 8 and 9 learned the mathematical principles behind several magic tricks – do ask them to show you! The talk on shapes and smoke rings was highly enjoyed by Years 6 and 7, particularly the smoke tori being blown down the theatre above their heads (and if you don’t know what a torus, or tori are, we suggest you ask a Year 6 or 7 student or check our Twitter or Facebook feed.) Year 10 were given a fascinating tour of the fourth dimension, whilst Year 12 were enlightened as to just how much mathematics, at an incredibly high level, is present in the Simpsons.
This year also saw the launch of our ‘IB Mathematics Lesson for Parents’. Many thanks to those of you who attended. This saw us exploring infinite geometric series, solving one of Zeno’s paradoxes and wondering just how many times we could rip a piece of paper in half. We hope this proved enjoyable and enlightening for those of you who attended, and we will look at running some more later in the school year.
We hope it’s been an enjoyable week, for all students and parents involved. It’s certainly been a lot of fun for us to run!
