Looking back on the Tanzania Expedition 2016
The Tanzania Expedition just keeps getting bigger and better. This year we had the privilege of accompanying 15 amazing young people to Africa. Once there, there was no rest. Some pupils went straight on a two-day safari, where they unluckily spent one of the days stuck in the mud. Nevertheless, this led to an incredible experience of talking to a group of Masai tribesmen and their 200 goats and sheep. Our other group were equally as lucky and saw the ever-elusive lionesses with her cubs. The rest of the time was spent making a real difference and that is what we really had come to do.
For two days we worked at a local village in Kitefu. During our expedition as a family of Nord Anglia Schools we managed to build nine goat sheds, nine smokeless stoves (that were designed and created by some pupils at the British School Beijing Shunyi) and nine solar electricity systems. It was an amazing, unique and inspirational experience, knowing that we truly have made a transformation in someone else’s life. Whilst working at the school in Kitefu we were part of a team that stayed to help build two blocks of accommodation for teachers. This allows teachers to remain at school and not have to walk at least one hour at the end of each day. As an added bonus we also helped to make 9 new school desks, as some classes have up to 100 children in them and not enough seating.
It was a great expedition and learning experience!
Following the postponement of Journey’s End before Christmas, we are pleased to announce the new dates.
Year 9 have been showing their green fingers/thumbs by trying to germinate cress seeds under various conditions, to see what is important for the seed growth.
There was more basketball on Saturday. This time our U14 Girls A and B teams had their DVAC Festival here at BISB.
