TWO INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED CURRICULA

At our British primary school in Warsaw,  primary teaching blends the National Curriculum for England and International Primary Curriculum (IPC). This develops students in Years 1–6 into ambitious, independent learners, giving them everything they need to flourish in the next stage of their education. At The British School Warsaw, we ensure the core subjects of English and Maths are delivered consistently and rigorously, using the National Curriculum for England. Most other subjects follow the IPC International Primary Curriculum. This suits the requirements of an international school environment and helps students understand different countries and cultures from an early age. We teach Polish from Year 1, enabling native speakers to hone their literacy skills while helping non-native children grasp the foundations. To enhance our Primary students’ linguistic flexibility, we also teach French, German and Spanish.

THE PRIMARY SCHOOL JOURNEY

Throughout their Primary education, we nurture children’s curiosity and love of learning. Our curriculum builds on their natural development, helping them grow into confident, disciplined, independent learners. They study a variety of stimulating topics and themes, forming links across subjects and recognising the diverse elements of their learning.

By the time students reach Year 6, we ensure they’re ready for a smooth and successful transition to Secondary education. They wave goodbye to their Primary years as effective communicators, willing to take intellectual risks, and able to organise their thoughts critically and coherently.

NATIONAL CURRICULUM FOR ENGLAND

The National Curriculum for England promotes the development of knowledge, understanding, and skills. It gives teachers the flexibility to plan higher-level work for children achieving significantly above expectation while preparing lessons for those who need extra support.

INTERNATIONAL PRIMARY CURRICULUM (IPC)

Schools across the globe use the IPC to help students gain a deep sense of their culture and nationality. They also learn empathy for communities around the world, setting them on the path to becoming globally minded citizens. Daily learning focuses on a central theme, such as rainforests, and enables students to make connections across subjects. This instils in them an interdisciplinary approach to learning from a young age, and gives them clear structure while encouraging them to engage with the curriculum as a whole.

GOALS

The IPC guides teachers and students through three Learning Goals: Subject, Personal, and International. These help children understand how to derive knowledge from a variety of sources, gives them the practical abilities to research, and helps them make topical and thematic links between subjects. By working toward their Learning Goals, children are empowered with essential skills for modern life: adaptability, empathy, resilience, teamwork and communication.

ASSESSMENT

We assess our primary students so teachers can better instruct them on an individual level, personalising their education so they thrive. Assessment is a daily part of school life. It helps students recognise the standards they can achieve, informs parents of their child’s progress, and enables teachers to identify possibilities for academic intervention.

ACADEMIC REPORTS

Primary students receive one academic report per term. Teachers use these to communicate academic and social development to parents and set personalised targets that students should focus on in each subject. These targets are ambitious by design, motivating students to challenge themselves and excel.

We also offer parent–teacher consultations during the school year by appointment.
