St Andrews students welcomed Alex Rendell to speak about his journey from acting to environmentalism in Thailand. STA students’ partner with Rescued-Glass an upcycling company, to create a better and brighter future. Our biologists embraced a challenge to demonstrate scientific knowledge, creativity, and artistic skills.
On Friday last week, we welcomed Alex Rendell, Thailand’s first National Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme, to the High School, to speak to Year 10 and 11 Thai students about his journey from acting to environmentalism.
Mieng-Kum and Imlee, our two Year 11 MCs for the event, reflect here on what they learned from Alex’s visit.
“Having a conversation with Alex for less than 1 hour has completely changed my perspective about the environment. Alex successfully spread the awareness that environmental problems are very close to us and our future is in everyone's hands. Not only have I realized about these global issues, but being the MC was also an immense step out of my comfort zone as an introverted person. I had to practice intensely and put a lot of effort into how to speak naturally in front of over 150 students and handle any unexpected circumstances that could happen. Last but not least, this event could not have taken place without significant support from all of the teachers in the Thai Department. Thank you for guiding me throughout this memorable journey and giving me this opportunity that I will never forget.”
Mieng-Kum
“Last week, I had this great opportunity to be a part of the “Taking care of the Environment with Alex'' talkshow. My friend, Mieng-Kum, and I were selected to be the main MCs. We were very happy to get this job as we have been working very hard and putting in a lot of effort to get selected following the casting. The experience was very fun and memorable, and I learned so much more about both the environment and Alex Rendell himself. I would like to thank the Thai department for this great opportunity, and for working really hard to put this special event together.”

“Upcycling, a term not many recognize, but a term that will soon revolutionize the way we manage waste.” - Shubha Suebsukhchareon, Upcycling is the New Recycling
Today we introduce our newly founded Activity in school, with STA students partnering with Rescued Glass, an ambitious initiative to become a socially conscious business. Rescued Glass upcycle glass bottles from landfill and transform them into high-quality, decorative household products such as candles and decanters, upcycling hundreds of glass bottles and jars so far.
Rescued Glass is unique in the sense that they aim to maximise their impact to create a better and brighter future. Every aspect of their business, from their fuel-efficient transport network to their positive impact workforce commitment, to their sustainable packaging, maximises their social and environmental impact, seeking to empower less privileged people and using sustainable materials throughout their upcycling process.
With an eagerness to make a difference, STA students are working with Rescued Glass, hoping to both protect the environment and fuel their passion for entrepreneurship. STA students also hope to raise awareness of the issue of glass wastage, through educating other students about responsible consumption and production, and their initiative to reduce inequalities by empowering underprivileged members of the Khlong Toey communities through job opportunities.

Miss Nikki’s Year 10 and 12 Biology students were given an extended project challenge to demonstrate both their creative and artistic skills and their Scientific knowledge.
Year 10 students were asked to create a 3d labelled model of a cross section of a leaf, identifying the key structures and giving further information on their role in photosynthesis. The students rose to the challenge producing some very creative and well thought out models.
Well done to the following winners from 10.2: 1st place – Siddharth; 2nd place – Pearl; and 3rd place – Serena and Kirpa, and the following winners from 10.41: 1st place – Kyle, Sasha and Natalie; 2nd place – Clementine and Paola; and 3rd place – Eleonore.
Ms Nikki’s 12.41 Biology HL class were given the task of creating a 3D model of a DNA molecule. Their models needed to show the complex structure of DNA and its unique base pairing and include some details or descriptions about the key part of the molecule.
Her 12.61 class were given the task of creating a 3D model of a stage of mitosis. Their models needed to show key structures of the cell and description of what is happening with the chromosomes.
Both sets of students rose to the challenge producing some very creative and well thought out models. Well done to the following winners from 12.41: 1st place – Enya, Nimit and Shivin; 2nd place – Antonia and Phil; and 3rd place – Pauline, and the following winners from 12.61: 1st place – Pat; 2nd place – Allen and Mild; and 3rd place – Hitanshi.
Well done to all Miss Nikki’s Year 12 Biologists for showing their high academic excellence, ambition and creative spirit.
Ms Nikki
Many of you will have seen last week’s live reaction video of David (Year 13) receiving an acceptance email to study Cinema & Media Studies at the University of Southern California, regularly ranked as one of the top film schools in the world.
You can see the video on our Facebook page and read more about David, and other IBDP Visual Arts students', offers on our website.
In this week’s Universities Update, we focus on seven students who have received offers/acceptances from Medicine courses around the world:
Arin, who was the focus of our first Universities Update, when he received the Class of 2021’s first University offer, to study Biomedical Science at the University of Warwick, has now also received two further offers to study Biomedical Science, at King’s College London and the University of Sussex, as well as an offer to study Medicine at St. George’s University in Grenada.
Cherry has been accepted to study Medicine at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang.
Ing has been accepted to study both Biomedical Engineering and Medicine and Management at Mahidol University, as previously mentioned in my focus on students accepted to study at Chulalongkorn University and Mahidol University, as well as receiving offers to study Medical Sciences at the University of Exeter and Biomedical Science at King’s College London.
Jasleen has received an offer from the prestigious joint Doctor of Medicine Programme - a collaboration between Srinakharinwirot University, Thailand and the University of Nottingham in the UK, as described in a previous Universities Update.
Kazu, whose offers to study Medical Sciences and Engineering at University College London and Molecular Bioengineering at Imperial College London were also featured in a previous Universities Update, has now also received further offers to study Sciences at The University of British Columbia and Life Sciences at The University of Toronto, missing the Canada-themed Universities Update, as well as Medicine at the University of Debrecen and Semmelweis University in Hungary.
As well as these five students, two students from last year’s Graduating Class have reapplied to universities this year:
Kunika has received offers to study Medicine at the University of Leicester and Medicine and Surgery at Newcastle University.
Matrix has received offers to study both Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at Mahidol University.
Congratulations to all of these students on their offers to study Medicine, one of the most competitive subjects, at universities around the world.
If you work in the medical field and would like to help the next generation of St Andrews Medicine students, by possibly offering internship positions during the summer holiday, please let us know. We would also be very happy to hear from members of our community who work in other areas where an internship would be a significant advantage in future university applications, for example Economics and Engineering.
As always, you can see more details about this year’s, and previous year’s, University Offers and Acceptances on our website.
