This week our all of our Year 9 classes at St Andrews International School Bangkok presented their toprock choreography in a dance battle.
Our Year 9 classes have been learning a Breakdance Unit focusing on the element of Toprock. Toprock is an important component of breakdance that is mainly performed in a standing position with challenging footwork, fluidity, and individual style. Our students were taught several basic movements of Toprock such as Outlaw, Kick-step, Indian Step or Hip twists, Spin drop, and a popular move called the 6 step. This week we ended the Breakdance unit with a dance composition that they have been working on in the last 3 weeks. Each class divided themselves in partners or groups to create their own choreography using Toprock movements and New Style grooves. To experience the world of breakdance, students get to present their work through a dance battle. On battle day, each group gets to randomly choose another group to battle with. Their classmates, the audience gets to vote the winner for each battle round. Winners of each round will battle each other in the final round. Each class then chooses a winner in the final round to represent their class in the Toprock Championship battle with the other Year 9 winners in Term 2. Here are some highlights of their performances...
Juilliard Curriculum Dance Specialist, Donna Costello will be visiting St Andrews on 28 and 29 November 2018. She will be conducting class observations and demonstrations for selected Year 7 to Year 9 classes as well as professional development workshop for our performing arts department. We are also excited to announce her delivery of special after school dance workshops for the STA Dance Team on 28 November.
As part of the St Andrews Careers programme, Year 10 and Year 12 students had the valuable opportunity to hear from 20 industry professionals, including alumni, about various career pathways. The morning panel discussions provided insights into professional routes, required qualifications, and essential interpersonal skills for workplace success.
As Term 3 comes to an end, three senior students, Eleonore, Natalie, and Ananya, reflect on their experiences in the IB Diploma Programme at St Andrews International School Bangkok. Perhaps one of the most meaningful projects Ananya and Natalie took on during their senior studies was starting a foundation with a few other friends called Today4tomorrow – an initiative to provide opportunities to underprivileged girls in Thailand.
Congratulations to St Andrews senior student Natalie, who received an offer at the University of Bath to pursue a degree in Psychology. Have a read to learn more about Natalie’s perspective on the IB Diploma Programme and the endless possibilities that await her exploration.
