How to Get into the Music Industry: 5 Essential Traits

American Idol Season 22 Top 10 Kayko's story

Breaking into the music industry is no small feat, but with the right mindset and skill set, aspiring musicians can carve out a successful career.

North Broward Preparatory School recently hosted breakout star and alum, American Idol Top 10 Season 22 finalist Sam Kelly-Cohen (Class of 2018), better known as Kayko. He shared his journey from NBPS graduation, attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and reaching America’s television screens on American Idol. Dubbed the 'Accidental American Idol' after being encouraged to audition by Katy Perry, Kayko's rise to stardom displayed the importance of hard work, dedication, and authenticity.

During his Florida tour, Kayko performed for the school, and high school concert choir students interviewed him about succeeding in the music business and excelling in songwriting.

His insights revealed five essential traits every aspiring artist needs to thrive:

1. Authenticity

In an industry overflowing with talent, standing out comes down to being yourself. Kayko emphasized the importance of staying true to who you are as an artist. “If you don’t like your own work, why should anyone else?” He asked the choir. Authenticity is not just about the music you create, but also how you present yourself to the world. Whether you are posting on social media or performing on stage, being genuine not only attracts a loyal fanbase but also ensures that artists stay connected to their creative core.

2. Resilience

The path to success in the music business is filled with challenges, and the ability to persevere through rejection and failure is crucial. Kayko shared how resilience played a significant role in his journey, telling students, “The hardest part of the music industry isn’t getting in—it’s staying in.” Setbacks are inevitable, but those who push through the tough times often find themselves on the other side with greater opportunities. Learning from mistakes and continuing to improve is key to longevity in the business.

3. Versatility

Success in the music industry often requires wearing many hats. Kayko's experience as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and performer proved the power of versatility. “You need to be able to do a lot of different things,” he explained. Being versatile allows you to adapt to different opportunities and collaborate with a variety of people, increasing your chances of success. Whether it is learning a new instrument or understanding production basics, expanding your skill set sets you apart from the competition.

4. Collaboration

Collaboration is the heartbeat of the music industry, igniting creativity and unlocking new opportunities. From songwriting partnerships to live performances, working with others can be the catalyst for success. Kayko's American Idol journey as an example. If he didn't play piano for Abby Blake’s audition, that door might have remained closed. Speaking to North Broward Prep’s choir, Kayko shared how building authentic relationships is key to growth. “Surround yourself with passionate and talented people,” he urged. “It’s not just about networking; it’s about connecting with those who inspire and challenge you to reach your full potential as an artist.”

5. Social Media Savvy

In today’s digital age, being successful in the music business also means understanding how to promote yourself online. Kayko highlighted the importance of social media, particularly platforms like TikTok, Facebook and Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, for getting your music out to the world. “It’s not about posting constantly—it’s about creating something you’re proud of,” he advised. Artists who engage their audience on social media while keeping their authenticity have a better chance of reaching new listeners and building a fanbase.

Kayko’s visit to North Broward Prep left high school concert choir students with valuable advice on thriving in the music business. With these five essential traits—authenticity, resilience, versatility, collaboration, and social media savvy—aspiring musicians can create a solid foundation for a successful career. Kayko’s journey showed that success comes from staying true to yourself, persevering through setbacks, and continually expanding your skill set.
