The role of our Student Councils
Our Primary and Secondary Student Councils are ambitious groups that give our children a real voice. They unite our students, represent them on important issues, and make a positive difference throughout the school.
Our Student Councils:
- Encourage our students to speak up and influence decisions.
- Create a sense of community, raising global awareness by considering the needs of our diverse international family.
- Develop our students’ transferable skills, including responsibility, empathy, and leadership.
They also lead the way on our partnerships with local and international charities.
What skills do our students learn?
Our Student Councils are a great opportunity for children to:
- Develop their personal leadership skills.
- Learn how to work – and make decisions – as a group.
- Gain a better understanding of themselves and their capacity for leadership.
- Learn the importance of taking responsibility.
- Take the lead in school and our community.
What do our children think about our Student Councils?
“Student Council events really bring everyone together. They add a sense of fun and a feeling of being at home.”
Theophile, Year 12 student
“The most important thing we do is organise fundraisers. Sometimes we send clothes and gifts and do toy drives for schools in places that don’t have as many resources as we do.”
Phoebe, Year 5 student
How are children elected to our Student Councils?
When students run for Student Council, they go through an election process. This includes the following steps:
- Students present their ‘case’ to their peers.
- Candidates create a poster and give a speech explaining:
- Why they’re a good choice to represent their class or section of the school.
- The difference they want to make.
- The skills and ideas they’ll bring to the Council.
- Students vote for the candidate they want to represent their class or section.
- Teachers also vote for Student Council positions.
