Secondary Campus Weekly Update

Secondary Campus Weekly Update - Secondary Campus Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

I hope you had an enjoyable Lunar New Year with your family and friends.

Over the last half term, our IB students have celebrated offers from many top universities around the world. These include offers from Cambridge University, Imperial College London, Hong Kong University (HKU), Durham University and University College London (UCL). We look forward to celebrating more offers over the coming weeks and sharing more information on current offers too.

Our students will be meeting with their Form Tutors this week to discuss their SR2 reports, along with setting targets for the upcoming term. These important meetings encourage our students to reflect on their progress and identify areas in which they need to focus on over the remainder of the academic year.

IGCSE and IB examination classes have their eyes firmly focused on the future. Mentoring programs have begun as well as intervention offers rolling out. Beyond this, our IGCSE cohort is looking at their future options with the help of our IB team and their Form Tutors. It’s an exciting time for all!

Finally, our Y6 into Y7 transition is on the horizon! We are very much looking forward to meeting and working with our NAIS Hong Kong families to ensure an engaging and smooth transition to high school takes place. More information will be shared over the coming weeks.

Arianna M. (Y12) – Reflection - Choosing options for IB
When February 2024 started approaching, it was time to pick my IB subjects. Having considered them since year 9, I felt confident in my choices, yet when it came to officially selecting the subjects, it felt like I was juggling between passions, skills, and university requirements.

From subjects I was initially set on picking to the ones I had never even considered, the final result reflected hours of discussion and consideration. I had changed Geography to Psychology, French to Spanish, and switched around my higher levels a few times.

What truly guided my decision-making was the possible majors I wanted to pursue at university. As an aspiring computer science student in the US, the only compulsory subject across most universities I was interested in attending was HL Maths AA. Overall, I chose which subjects would support me in my future aspirations and aligned most with my passions.

As difficult as the process may be and as tough as it can feel to leave certain subjects behind, the first month of the IB helps reveal how each course resonates with you. Some subjects you once loved you will not like as much, or others you deem your least favourite could ignite newfound enthusiasm. The beauty of the IB experience lies in that discovery; embracing uncertainty will lead to exciting opportunities.

As I continue to engage in my chosen subjects, I look forward to the ongoing progress in my IB journey and the exciting opportunities it will bring. I wish all the best to the Y11s making this important decision!

Y9 Parents Evening – Mr. Cross
We are pleased to invite our parents of Year 9 students to attend our parent teacher meetings on Wednesday 5th February. In person appointments are available between 1.15pm - 3.15pm which will take place in the Kwun Tong Auditorium. Online appointments are then available from 3.45pm - 6.30pm. This will be a valuable opportunity for parents to discuss their child’s progress with each of their teachers and discuss likely IGCSE subject choices for next year. Please log in to Meet the Teacher to make your appointments before the booking period closes at 1.15pm on Tuesday 4th February.

Y12 University Updates – Mrs. Holt
Before the break, our Y12 students had the opportunity to learn about law and medicine at university. St George’s University talked to Year 12 and some Year 11 students about the opportunities and collaborations afforded by their programme in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, the University of York wowed our Year 12 and some Year 11 students with all the wonders of Yorkshire and how project-based learning offers a great way to study law.

For Year 13, many applications for university have been sent and many offers have arrived! More details in the coming weeks.

We are so proud of our Year 13s and wish them all the very best with their next steps.

Match Reports
In the ISSFHK U16 Girls Football playoffs, the NAIS Knights faced Stamford American School in a challenging semi-final match. After a rocky start, they trailed 3-1 at halftime. The halftime talks focused on urgency, high pressing, and quick defensive transitions. The girls showed remarkable resilience, rallying to equalise at 3-3 by full time. The match went to penalties, and with the score tied at 2-2 and one penalty left for NAIS to take, all the pressure fell on goalkeeper and captain Larissa. She stepped up to take the decisive shot and secured the win with a goal. GOOOOO Knights!

In the finals against Island School, despite their determination and effort, the team faced very tough competition and at this point we had a few injuries across the team. The opposition ultimately dominated, leading to a silver medal for the Knights to finish the season. Overall, the girls demonstrated incredible perseverance and skill throughout their matches, making their coaches and supporters immensely proud.
