Dear Parents,
At the end of last week, we had our first assembly since returning from our Chinese New Year holiday.
It was a wonderfully engaging assembly by 4C which spotlighted the excellent opportunities that the class have been enjoying since the beginning of Term 2. As part of the audience, it was particularly interesting to recognise the interconnectedness and richness of the curriculum. A real strength of our practice here at NAIS Hong Kong.
The curriculum at school places students’ well-being and personal development, both pastoral and academic, as our core driver. It’s part of our ‘why’. When we combine this with a curriculum that is contextually rich, we know that our children are being given every opportunity to be globally enriched citizens. In the short term, we see this evidenced in our assemblies. Importantly, however, we also know that schools’ curricula seeks to bridge the gap between skills and knowledge needed today and those that maybe needed in the future.
In the 4C assembly, we saw how Drama, Art and English connected with the work on Chinese Myths and Lunar New Year Celebrations. We heard the children talk about the how they had been working on developing their creative literacy skills and critically reflecting on how to improve their work. We enjoyed seeing how they had developed confidence while showcasing learning from Drama lessons where they were motivated and engaged in their lessons. Our Art curriculum developed criticality in creative and expressive lessons.
How does this connect class assemblies with children’s futures? The recent World Economic Forum report: "The Future of Jobs Report", highlights the most important ‘fastest growing skills.’ At NAIS Hong Kong, we can recognise that our curriculum and teaching approaches are helping to support the development of skills that will help our children to thrive beyond the school gates.
