Asian Animal Sanctuary Tour

Asian Animal Sanctuary Tour - Asian Animal Sanctuary Tour

What a fantastic two days we had at Animals Asia Sanctuary this week with our students in Y 5,6, and 7. Despite some light rainfall, and muddy trekking, an incredible outing emerged from the opportunity to see the Moon Bears, Sun Bears, and also Himalayan Brown Bears, specifically Benji Bear.

The students followed closely with our tour guide inquiring with many different types of questions, with subjects varying from bear history, to what they eat on a daily basis, how they play together, and ultimately how Animals Asia helps bring a better quality of life through treatment and care to the bears.

Throughout our tour around the sanctuary, many conversations were taking place about Bear Bile Farming and the cruelty issue behind it. It was evident to see the empathy our students felt reading and learning about the various surgeries, conditions, and health issues many of the Bears have been through sometimes for up to 30 years.

The focus of the Bear Bile Farming program is to rescue bears from the bear bile industry, provide life-long care for rescued bears. Over 10,000 bears mainly moon bears but also sun bears and brown bears are held in captivity on farms in Asia to have bile extracted from their gall bladders on a regular basis, for profit. Bear bile is collected by means of various, invasive extraction methods, all of which cause massive infections in the bears.

Animals Asia has been partnered with Léman for over 4 years now, and it's quite spectacular to have the opportunity to visit and understand more about Animals Asia as a whole. I am already looking forward to the next trip.
