Meet Mr Carswell, lifelong rugby enthusiast and PE teacher with a passion for inclusion and for instilling a love of sport and fitness in all our students.

Q: Hi Mr Carswell, how long have you been a Dover Court teacher?

A: I have been here 5 years and I am still loving it!

Q: What do you love about teaching here and what do you feel makes Dover Court a special place?

A: Dover Court is a fantastic school to be teaching at. I am so proud of the inclusivity for all students across the school, as well as of the collaboration and positive mindset from the staff, ensuring that all students are in a nurturing environment, allowing them all to achieve their goals.

Q: We know that you are passionate about physical literacy, can you explain what that is?

A: Physical Literacy is the foundation and the building blocks of functional movements. This can range from balancing on one leg, to running and jumping or catching a ball. Our aim is to develop and support students throughout their PE journey so they can continue to enjoy and participate in sport and exercise for a long time after they have left DCIS and throughout life.

Q: Being a PE teacher, we understand that you are quite active, what sports do you enjoy in particular?

A: I love my rugby and racket sports and have recently started to enjoy surfing in various countries in Asia. I can’t wait to travel again!

Q: How did you get into rugby and what do you love about the sport?

A: My family have always been heavily involved in rugby so I’ve been surrounded by it since early childhood. I love that there is a place for all in a rugby team, no matter your size or stature; the team attitude and culture that rugby cultivates is second to none.

Q: Tell us more about your coaching roles outside of school!

A: I’m currently coaching as a part of the Singapore National team as well as coaching a local rugby club.

Q: You are part of the launching of Mixed Ability Rugby at Dover Court, working with the Atlas Foundation and the Anita, Alex & Annabel Nicholson Memorial Fund. Can you tell us about Mixed Ability Rugby and the collaboration with the foundation?

A: The Mixed Ability Rugby ECA is part of Rugby Union where the teams are a mixture of players who are able bodied and players who have physical or intellectual disabilities. The ECA is open to every who wants to join, whatever their rugby experience and we are particularly keen to encourage boys and girls with physical and intellectual disabilities to do so!
