During our creative movement and yoga classes, Pk-1st grade students work on coordination, self- expression, and channeling their energy and feelings into dance. They use a variety of music, simple movements, balance poses, and props during class. Classes focus on process over product. While working on yoga poses, the students are truly learning and practicing mindfulness techniques, self-regulation, and developing a deeper sense of self. While engaging in creative movement, they are developing sensory awareness and learning to tune in and recognize visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile sensations. Students are also working on communicating ideas through dance and movement, spatial awareness (where the body moves), effort awareness (how the body moves), and relational awareness (relationships the body creates). Ms. Mendez and our Julliard advisors have created a whole-child educational experience that ignites creativity in our students and allows them to take ownership of their learning, which is then reflected in all academic subjects.
